I am confused. How could Vettel have done better? He got the pole and did not have to deal with the yellow flag.

I was talking about getting the most of their car, I honestly believe RBR had more than 3 tenths to Ferrari. You think I'm wrong?

I would not know whether Vettel had extracted the full performance out of that car, but during his 2nd hot lap, I did not see him missing apexes, or making driving errors.

I know, RBR is an easy car to drive.

How can anyone think that he could do better today?. I think people it's not aware that he is driving the 3 best car of the grid, and today the car was not better than McLaren, only closer than other races. And yeah if you put together the best partial times he could be 2nd but things don't work like that. He has done some sloppy qualifying sessions, sometimes because taking a different aproach than Massa and others because his own mistakes, but today is not one of those, it was a good session. In my opinion of course.

What is going on with you people? Alonso could've gone faster and could possibly have been on the front row. He by no means extracted the maximum from the car as seen by his sector times...

And I keep hearing that Massa was only faster in sector 2 because he takes a lot of kerb (which is just conjecture)... Hamilton has actually said that you can lose time by taking to much.

The only thing I know is that Massa while running a lower downforce setting was a tenth faster than Alonso in the second sector when he really shouldn't be.

Looks like he didn't know what to say when asked about the wing initially...

If we're talking about maximizing the performance of the car, indeed he didn't. Yes, he should have take full advantage of other misfurtunes and mistakes... But honestly, this was the usual 4-6 tenths in front of Massa. Not so sloppy...
Not so
A conjecture? And with more downforce he cleared Felipe easily in S1. Weird is it?

I think he got the most our of the car for today. As he said, 4th is better than his usual 5th. We should get a podium tomorrow. Hopefully. TIFOSI!!

Ok Alonso maybe didn't quite get 100% out of the car but he was a tenth away from it so that's a little unfair IMO!

 Thanks. Im not too worried about the start because neither jenson or hamilton have been great on starts. Also both of Alonso's great starts in monza and spain came from the dirty side IIRC. I actually think alonso has a good chance to overtake webber whos starts have been awfull.

I do expect him to gain a place off the line, I just hope Vettel gives himself a buffer as he'll have a 7kph deficit to Alonso on the straight if the trap speeds from qualy are to be believed. And it is a long straight, allowing the possibility for him to do to Vettel what Vettel did to Hamilton on a similar first few corners.

I'm not sure why some of you think Alonso didn't get the maximum from the car in Quali. Let's have a look at the times throughout the weekend.

FP1:

ALO: engine failure

MAS: 1'28.644

FP2:

ALO: 1'25.930

MAS: 1'25.706

FP3:

ALO: 1'25.784

MAS: 1'26.058

QUALI:

ALO: 1'24.519

MAS: 1'25'122

You can clearly see that Alonso set the fastest lap time of the weekend in Quali. I would say that's getting the maximum from the car.

Im sure he will. He's been good at giving himself the 1+ sec buffer in the first few laps. Barring a mistake or mechanical failure i think vettel should cruise it.

A podium should be possible today and maybe even a win. I think it's the best chance since Silverstone. As ever, will depend on tyre performance and tyre wear in the race. But feeling a bit more confident than the last couple of races.

I'm confident for today, and this could be the last chance for Fernando to win this year, so I'm pretty sure he is going to give everything and more (like always anyway).

Why are you not optimistic for Abu Dhabi/ Brazil?
Although i'd say Mclaren then Red Bull will be the car to have at those races

Then you answered your own question ;)
At most tracks this year, especially in the 2nd half of the season, Ferrari has been the third fastest car. Even when it's quick in the race usually a win is impossible because of the qualifying pace or the hard tyre problem. So today is probably Alonso's best chance, although I still expect Vettel to win.

It's not like I'm ruling out the possibilty to win in Brazil but I don't think we will be that close to Red Bull in the next races (3rd, +0.300 from Vettel), but it's only a feeling.

Seb is borrowing it. Seeing as how the Ferrari/RBR front wings are so similar.

Good podium and for once decent team strategy though hard to take much satisfaction as car again so far off the pace.

Thought Fernando was once again really good today, he almost always maximises his car on race day. I hope McLaren and Ferrari produce decent cars next year, we need to see Alonso fighting for wins again.

And yet another great performance from Alonso. 3rd in a car that is 5th fastest (2 RB & 2 Mac), and by a margin.

Another very strong race. clearly his car is half second or so shy of where it needs to be but to beat a Red Bull on pure merit and a Mclaren hit by difficulties was a great effort

What can I say? Another top shelf drive from Fernando!

His maturity and patience is, to me, his greatest strength. He always keeps his eyes on the prize. Doesn't get flustered. And knows when to drop the hammer!

The results he brings Ferrari are akin to pulling a rabbit out of a hat.

Considering his penchant for doing magic tricks OFF the circuit, I think a deserving nickname for Fernando is "The Magician" ,for the performance he delivers on it!

Sounds less pretentious than "TDG", and is certainly an accurate description of his driving. LET'S PUSH THIS! Are you with me? Every superhero deserves a nickname!

I would rather to leave the word "Magic" to certain Brazilian F1 legend.

Btw, his nickname is "Nano". His friends from Asturias call him so.

Nice drive by Fernando, went a little wide at the start and got himself into the dusty stuff. It kind of surprises me that he has been on podium 9 times this year.

He has had the effort in 2011, let's hope he gets the results in 2012.

No, it is not bad per se, but taking into account that "Magic" was the nickname used for Senna, it is an unfortunate choice.

(That and the fact that Lobato gets on my nerves, and he uses it so often! :p )
