In USA obviously the whining was just strange cause hamilton was simply faster and had a better qualifying.

It's a perfect example of selective memory, and you call others delusional.
Go check archives - Alonso was faster in every session except Q3 where Hamilton was simply given better strategy - back then qualifying was on race fuel and Hamilton was ligter plus he had one more lap in fuel burning phase - a favour he had to return in Hungary, yet we all know what happened. And in the race Alonso was also faster - he spent all the race on Hamiltons tail. So that's an example where Hamilton was simply gifted victory, despite being slower.
And that's a good summary of the season - performace of both drivers was close, yet Alonso slightly faster, but team slightly favoured Hamilton on many occasions.

Thank you very much.

Back on topic, Fernando seemed to be laughing in the latest picture. I'm sure the drivers are already in shape, this will hopefully add to it and allow them time to focus before the upcoming tests.

I'm sure the drivers are never out of shape.

I´m mainly talking about results. He had it pretty hard, and got beaten, by a newcomer to the series in mclaren, and at ferrari has he really stood out? Ofc he didnt really have the best car, but at times very quick depending on tracks, but I really dont see him extracting anything more than could be expected from the car. Nor has he managed to improve the car in any significant way in two years...

:stoned:

He has completely out shone Massa in both seasons. In 2011 he had 10 podium finishes in the third best car. 5 of those was for second place. Massa didn't even nab one. In two seasons for Ferrari Alonso has been on the podium in 20 of 38 races. That betters Button & Hamilton and equals him with Webber. Only Vettel has pocketed more. Only Vettel has scored more points in the last two seasons. He would have been champion in 2010 if it wasn't for a pit timing blunder that can't be put on his shoulders. The only track one can claim as being a weakness is Malaysia, which has been the only track he hasn't finished 4th or better at these past two seasons.

:drunk:

Wow..I did not know of those stats. And regarding malaysia, his drive there in 2010 was one of a true champion.

People tend to only see what they want to see.

One more fun stat, Alonso and Hamilton both have produced six wins over the last two seasons. Again only Vettel has done better.

One can only say Alonso has not produced "results" by comparing him to Vettel, which in my opinion is a bit of nonsense considering the difference in the calibre of car each has raced.

Alonso might not be getting the results, but you can´t put it down on him. I don´t know what you think, but I see him better now (2010-2011) than in seasons in which he got better results, like 2005 or 2007. Vettel´s total domination is shadowing his recent performances, which are very good.

Didn't read the newspaper recently, but I saw this tweet on Twitter: 'There is more truth in Kimi’s answers than there are in the “strategic lies” Alonso has said in a hundred press conferences' It was written in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica.

I have to say, there's some truth there...

Good Luck to Alonso this year. I believe both McLaren and Ferrari will be very strong, and Redbull aswell, Merc unknown.

I have a feeling it will be an amazing competitive year. We could see Button, Alonso, Lewis and Vettel all competiting.

I think Lewis is the fastest driver, but I have always said Alonso is the BEST driver, almost the complete package.

What sums up Alonso in my opinion.

Brillaint Driver, very driven to get WDC, possibly to the exclusion of even his own team, his desire to win comes first, due to this he had a dark side, but he was still young then and I think the last two years we've seen a more mature thoughtful Alonso. He gives respect and commands it.

Those abilities helped MSC to get all the titles with Ferrari, where he was developed and was at his prime. This shows that Alonso is on his perfect way to achieve success with Ferrari.

Alonso will always be a contender if the car is good. A truly great driver that is desperately seeking that 3rd WDC.

I hope we get some decent Lewis vs Alonso action this year.

Lewis vs Massa was exciting for all the wrong reasons.

Nico Hulkenberg: "He is the most complete driver on the grid"

New year...New chance. His driving in 2011 was sublime, so if he keeps that level of driving and has got THE CAR this time, then we are in for a great year. Hopefully, 2012 will be the best year of Fernando's career. Good luck for him

He just has to keep beating Massa to keep looking good, no matter what the car can actually do.
I don`t think he`ll have too much trouble doing it.

He could beat everybody in truth, very very few drivers or none could defeat Alonso.

He only needs the car.

Kudos to Hulkenberg for having the guts to say Alonso is the best, and was the best in 2011, not an easy thing to say when you are German. For those who can read spanish:

"Clearly, Fernando Alonso. He goes to the limit on every lap," said Hulkenberg. "For me he is the most complete driver of all, he have all the things that are key to a driver."

"Fernando drove in a Ferrari that was inferior in 2011, every lap giving the absolute limit allowed. However, when I saw that was among the first, it's crazy"

I think there is something lost in translation, if someone can check the original version, it will be appreciated.

Anyways if you ask Alguersuari who's the best driver in F1, I bet he won't say Alonso.

Him being young and German might be in fact part of the reason why he said, as the other choice of 2011 was also young and German. In this sense both are direct competitors, while Alonso is from a different generation. There are zero guts involved into telling something like that to the German press, which is not like the Italian or Spanish one, but I must say he really has a nice choice of words when describing Alonso.

I think the translation was roughly right: "Alonso is the most complete driver combining all important skills. He is close to the limit in each lap - in a Ferrari which was inferior in 2011. It was crazy that he could still keep up with the best." The next sentence "Der fährt, dass die Heide wackelt." doesn't sound like he was doing a scientific analysis though. ;) He also expects Vettel to be strong in 2012 as well as RB / McLaren.

Since the other top driver in F1 ( Hamilton ) has already an open thread on what is he is going to do in 2012 then I consider that is only fair that FA has one too , so hopefully with the permission of the Mods we get to post the latest news on Alonso , thanks , start firing away ...

This is quite a narrow minded opening post I think. While Alonso and Hamilton are definitely amongst the elite, you simply cannot discount double-world champion Vettel and also the champion that is Jenson Button, the latter having really shown Hamilton how it's done last year.

With regards to Alonso, I expect him to do what he usually does at the Scuderia... thrash Massa, and be the team's only driver with a hope of success.

The opposite, he has always said that Alonso is the best :).

Thanks Apoka, I readed two different Spanish news sites and both reported different quotes, that's what I thought that there was something lost in translation ;)

i dont think that there is any driver right now in the f1 paddock (also the experts) that wouldnt say the same about alonso, especially after 2011.

as already said: alonsos achivements in 2011 under the given circumstances were the most outstanding performance of a driver in the history of this sport.
and guess what. he will even top that in 2012 ;)

At least according to the big guys in the paddock, the F1 principals the top driver in 2011 was by fair margin a young German called Sebastian Vettel. Needless to say he also tops the average out of the last 4 seasons, making him in their eyes the top driver of those last combined 4 years. So much for the facts.

Alonso has certainly performed very well in 2011 but calling it the most outstanding performance of a driver in the history of this sport is to say the very least quite gross. We will see how competitive the cars and the drivers are in 2012.

Too true. I'm a Lewis fan but don't see a issue with complementing Alonso as an outstanding driver. Its a pity some fans can't do the same, eg: Hamilton 2012 which is a sespit and needs closing.

There is a few top drivers and at the moment, you'd rank Vettel, Alonso, Lewis and Button in this group and I'd say everyone was below this group, that all have differering strenghts and the good thing is they might all be in competitive cars. The above is no slight to MS or Kimi, but MS isn't in his youth now and wait and see what kimi turns up.

I rate Alonsos 2011 season very highly. He performed very well, was extremely consistent, convincingly beat his team mate and could keep up with Webber, Hamilton and Button in likely faster cars. However, I believe Vettel had an even better season (also taking his car advantage into account) - one of the best in F1 statistically and driving skill wise. I also believe Alonso will be a strong challenger in 2012 - especially if the Silverstone race turns out to be a good predictor for 2012 car performance.

Is this a publicity shot?
Perhaps I'm wrong but I don't remember any public photoshoots with his ex-wife. He kept his relationship quite hidden then. I wonder why he changed his "policy" all of a sudden ...

Its hard to fault Vettel's performance last year

vettel threw away two race wins.
nurburgring/hungary (counting for a half each) and canada.
i think, that with that car and under the given circumstances vettel had missed some opportunities to brake records (other than qualy).
