Ah yes Martyn Denley and his Gropa were frequent visitors to Snetterton in the 70's , as Andrew will verify.

As i recall it was orange & quick but did seem to break down a bit too often.

I did look into Mallory briefly yesterday and said hello to Simon Hadfield in the pits but totally failed to meet up with anyone else although I think I did see Alan heading out of the cafe. Also, my camera seems to have developed (no pun intended) a download problem (isn't that at Donington?) but my pics would have duplicated the others here anyway. I'll hopefully be able to attend again in a couple of weeks. Interesting machinery though.

I plan to be there, Pete, sporting a Pentax and - probably - a pair of shorts.

I love this photo. The facial expression, the elbow over the cockpit side keeping him in place, the bending of the front leaf spring. Great photo, Matt.

See you there- not sure that the shorts are a good idea, having seen your lallies; however they're better than Rainford's. ;)

The Cognac looks virtually unmodified in the photos, apart from the mirrors but the Elan has some worrying changes to the curves in the bodywork from how it was when I were a lad.

If you had seen it in period, Pete, I think I'm right in saying that you would have to have been at the the Nurburgring in 1964 to have seen that particular example, when Mike Spence crashed it in practice. I don't think it ever raced until it reappeared in historics, but I'm ready to be corrected by those who know.

You have me caught on thin ice with regards to the IWR Elan Alan; I'm referring to photos taken at the time, rather than photos I took at the time  . I first clapped eyes on it when Matty first owned it, it looks less lardy in green, compared to gold... maybe?

Here is an out-take photo of the Cognac from the 70's.

Someone was trying hard....check out the attitude of the car!
Very evocative of the mid 70s when real racing cars had big squashy slicks which always looked like they would peel off the rim and nice soft suspension.

Yes indeed, David, a Kiwi by birth but, like many of his countrymen, one who took up permanent residence in oz many years ago. In Simmos case that was more than 50 years ago so I hope I can be forgiven for forgetting his origins!!

Quite forgivable, Paul (though it was "only" 48 years ago that he left NZ)

I was surprised to see he used "NZ" on the entry-lists

David, Tony still has a NZ passport and thought that his Goodwood entry had more chance of acceptance if he entered as a kiwi as he thought there may be fewer of them looking for space on the grid than aussies. I don't know that it stands up too well but that was his response when some of us raised it with him. He is still using an Australian licence so, in that sense, it is an Australian entry!!

Telling perhaps that he still has an NZ passport. I know of at least two other motor-racing Kiwis long resident in your fair land who have taken up Australian citizenship.

Instead I will post mobile phone uploads that appear on my facebook.

A lotus 11 had an accident on the exit of Gerards I believe it was part of what you will see below as there was Oil flags about. I believe it was from Martin Stretton racing. It wasn't Martin driving though. He said it went light on the exit and straight to the inside into the barrier. I believe it made contact with a 750MC bike engine car which had side damage. The driver then came over and had a raised voice conversation with Martin. Photo of the driver pushing the car will be with the rest tomorrow.

So that was the first red flag, ambulance out but driver was fine.

After green they did about another 2/3 maximum when the red flags came out. Again.

A lap of oil meant 30 mins clearup. So 4 laps in the first hour. Atleast the weather was nice.

On track the most was...

Posted Image

They were released again to play in the dust, giving some good photos. With a few red flags all morning there was some decent running inbetween.

Hall&Hall brought along a nice amount

There was a few more things!

It's the fashion....

To all you guys who "sag" your pants and show your butt and underwear....did you know it originated in prison? It was a signal to the other MEN that you are "available". So if you wanna keep going around looking like your "available" for another dude to "tap that"... then keep thinking your cool while I think you look like a Fool!!! BTW they call it PBS (Prison Bitch Syndrome) :) !! ..............AND PULL UP YOUR DAMN PANTS

No joy with Colin Warnes of the Allard Register about the J2 I will ask friends involved with the VSSCA scene around Pocono to see if the car is familiar over there.

I always understood that, whilst its origins were in the US penitentiary suytem, it indicated that you had had your belt confiscated in case you saw fit to try to hang yourself as you were a hard criminal and must have been up for the electric chair etc. By inference, the youths who wear their garments thus use it as a means of making their mark.
