I was interested to see this P1800 at Mallory - one of my first cars was one of these :)

Did any successfully circuit race in period? I don't imagine their weight/engine combination gave them much track success if they did? Wasn't the engine (B18A) loosely based on the MGB block?

I think it´s a 1800 S and my first car was one of those.

The Volvo P1800/1800 S was raced rather successfully in SCCA in the 60´s.

The B18 engine was developed entirely by Volvo.

Correct, but no-one bothers too much at private tests

I am not an expert in these matters, as in so many others too, but there is an element of duty of care, surely, especially if they are paying for a service to be supplied and there are others involved. Where's ensign 14 when you want him?

This was tested today and feedback regarding the rear diffuser was positive, there's infinite adjustabilty due to the cunning and subtle use of cable ties.

I hope he is heeding the manufacturer's entreaty and is still using only Castrol Competition Oil. Otherwise it may invalidate any warranty he has from Signore Pedrazzani.

Set off from Altrincham at 6.30am in sleet/snow but as always the sun was out at Mallory :)

And 70s Formula 3 cars were all the rage today.....

Isn't it ironic that while this was being tested at Mallory, a few miles down the road at Silverstone, the talented and very promising son of it's original driver was testing for his sophmore season in GP3...and ended up the test in P2. One to watch is Conor Daly.

The owner and driver of the B38 is Rob Moores. He has been racing this car since the late 70's,first in F4 trim then later in the 80's when Toyota F3 took off the car was put back to full F3 spec.Rob races with the French Classic F3 these days and is normally unstopable around Pau. Very good driver and he should go well at Monaco.

It's a genuine two-owner car, isn't it? Only DD and Rob Moores I believe. Nice to see it running in its original livery having been seen in various schemes over the years, frequently promoting one of Rob's sportswear businesses and always immaculate.

Been a long week Phil... could be I guess.

F4 was great in those days, some good old chassis from FF2000, FSV, F3 of various eras, the occasional special, and some purpose built cars too. Variety used to be the spice, its no wonder I lost interest is it!

An RT1 nosecone was the obvious choice for the Cirrus as I lived not far from the Ralt factory. I used to rescue broken splitters and other parts from the rubbish bins and repair them. The original nose and cockpit surround came from Ian Flux who upgraded his RT1 to the later wide cockpit surround. Sadly neither Iain or I ever finished better than second in Cirrus 004...

I think my biggest claim to fame with Alan's Cirrus was the "dish of the day " award some time back in the 80's. I had hair then :rotfl:

I had one of those as well. Awarded by the lady marshals at Silverstone. It was a bit of a cheat as I knew them all as I was an ex marshal and I also produced some of their end of year prizes :)

Wednesday morning and it's absolutely sileing it down here in Brum. Whatever happened to the eternally sunny Wednesday mornings of last year?!?! This coming Saturday's VSCC Spring Start meeting at Silverstone was held in almost heatwave conditions in 2011, and I'll be surprised if you see 10C there this weekend. :well:

No, i was there but then again i should be i suppose...... :)

As my photo from our Twitter page shows, it was a mean and moody day weather wise and the track never dried for either four or two wheeled customers. Our three wheeled customers had the good sense to leave them in the garage and return on a drier day.

I have seen photos, not a bad turn out, e-type and some nice stuff heading to Donington this week.

Not to beat the Group C car that turned up last week, driven by Andy Meyrick.

Is it true that the noise rules have changed? It was always unsilenced but I heard that is no longer the case meaning so many cars can no longer be run at the Wednesday tests.

As Mallory has gone a bit quiet recently, I thought I might add some pics from todays testing at Oulton Park. As it's the AMOC meeting tomorrow I was hoping that a few old cars would be out. There were a few amongst the more modern Astons.

John Burton did a few slowish laps in his B26.....

Posted Image

....I don't know what the problem was but the car still looks good.

Posted Image

Zoe North did a lot of laps in her brightly painted Sunbeam Tiger...

Posted Image

....although she seemed to have a problem getting out of it!

Posted Image

There was one old Aston there. This smart looking DB4 (well I think it's a DB4).

Right, I am back! a relaxed morning as you are about to find out, decent weather and a nice turnout meant after a busy weekend at Donington I wanted to enjoy it rather than watching it through a viewfinder, so ofcourse not all the cars are going to be shown... right excuses out of the way time for my weeks worth...

Posted Image

Higher! higher!

Posted Image

Simon wanting a close up on camera, someone videoing to the right of me.

Posted Image

Gatmo was too busy playing with fences and metal wire to be cutting grass, so I had to use it!

Posted Image

Posted Image

Trying to find a new angle.

Posted Image

After watching this lap after lap I noticed whilst in my leaning position a fire under the engine, I thought it was over for the lovely Cortina but whatever it was seemed to have burnt off and it carried on powersliding!

Posted Image

Posted Image

Ben Anderson did a fantastic job in Simon's Trojan, even with a flat front right towards the end of the run!

Posted Image

They are my best.

Enjoy!

 1973 all over again...almost!

To complete the picture some helmet manufacturer really needs to do a modern take on those very uncomplicated early 70s designs with no vents and slots.

I though that would just be prop-helmets rather than the real deal?
