hi,

i'm not sure if this is the proper forum to ask for this, but given it is the nostalgia one, i'd say it definitely might be ;)

as the topic and it's description suggests, i am looking for images of the cars of the 1971 canam season. some cars might have been run in the '70 or '72 season as well, depending. the reason why i am asking for this is that i am a texture artist for a team dedicated to bring these beasts to your computer at home - for free - for the one and only grand prix legends. the problem here is that you only find so much on google, flickr or similar pages or in books. and some of the rarer cars are hardly available at all.
my interest in this is to recreate the dashboards / cockpits for all of these cars as close to reality as possible. those of you who know gpl and the mods already released (1965, 1966, 1969 seasons) know the standard we're aiming for. but of course you can only cram so much into a small 3d object and its texture - and given it's gpl, it is probably less than in current generation simulators. but regardless of that we, as a team, strive to give you the best representation possible and here's where you come in.

in the past i have seen several people post on here that have either driven, worked or even owned some of the cars on my list. i'm not sure if i should contact these people direct via PM or not - i.e. zooom comes to mind for the McLaren M8D? my preference would be out in the open though so that you all can have a look at these magnificent cars.

to any owners / former owners / crewmembers / restore specialsts:

If you have pictures of these cars, please post them. I am especially looking for anything regarding the dashboard, the gauges, the switches, etc.
Most of the time if i have been lucky enough to find anything, i have found images (i.e. on conceptcars.com) of the dashboards as they appear today - which may or may not include add-ons or labels that didn't used to be there in the cars in original spec. but of course all imagery is appreciated, restoration images would also be a nice goodie :)

again the list of cars:
Ferrari 712
Lola T222 / T260
McLaren M8C / M8D / M8F
Porsche 917/10
Shadow Mk2

any help / pics is greatly appreciated!

Well sorry to see that no one has responded to your request. I think I have some pics of the Shadow and maybe the Mclaren D & F possibly the C. No luck on the rest although if the Lola 260 comes around at the Wine Co. race at the end of May I should be able to get it and the McLarens and the Shadow. The Shadow is owned by Fred Cziska and I have sat in that car several times I can figure out how they drove that thing you sit straight on seat wise but the pedals are to the left to clear the wheel well then the pedals are straight on so your body is cocked to the left as you go straight which might help a bit in a left turn but rights must have been really a pain to get use to. Anyway most of the shots I have are back on film and might take a bit to find but the race in May is on the 22/23 so look for something just a bit after that and i'll shoot what comes to the race as they are a featured race.

hi buck,

thanks for your reply. i'm looking forward to seeing your pics, but please take your time - no rush!

it's really a shame that you hardly ever see these cars over here (europe), although there is a musem somewhere in germany where 1 or 2 of the canam '71 cars are shown, or at least have been at some point in the past. i'm hoping for historic racing to cover that again.

the cockpit of the shadow sounds a bit like the lancia stratos cockpit, where, if you want to be sitting in a straight line towards the pedals, you're sitting sideways turned to the center of the car. i wonder why they came up with a configuration like that. in the case of the stratos it might have been because of the wheelwells, but i don't see that with the can ams as they were rather wide compared to the tiny stratos. and it's not like they were doing ovals only either.

it'd be awesome if some of the other cars show up at that race. i'm probably going to see the 24 hours of le mans this year, but sadly the historic race is going to be in another month there. why they couldn't do that in one big long weekend beats me.

thanks again!

That museum has since sold off most of there can am cars some people here in my area bought the Shadow cars, he already had the 71 Shadow and now he has a DN4, the flat AVS shadow and a F1 shadow. The LOLA s60 is around here too restored and for sale so hasn't been raced much but shows up at the races. Actually I think both of the March 707's are in Europe and I see pics of them at Vintage races in Europe check this site out they cover racing and shows around the world newsletter@racingdeal.com.
The 712 Ferrari I believe is in Europe too. Don Nichols is trying to get funds to build a Shadow Museum but wants to build it somewhere besides California where he lives as well as a large amount of his cars are located. I'm in contact with another person who owns 4 shadow cars as well the AVS shadow driven by Follmer and Elford as well as a DN4 that was used after 1974 in a 76 race then in the Can Am 2 series with a small block Dodge motor, he also has an F5000 car and a DN3 F1 car so along with one other guy who has a DN2 and several people with various F1 cars here in California I would think he would build it here. He could get a building fairly cheap right now and if here in the bay area those people I mentioned would put their cars in there as long as they can get them out to race when they want to. Plus Don lives in Salinas/Carmel area which is 90 minutes away.

Anyway i'll get as many pics of cars as I can for you.

Yes the sideways seating was due to the wheel well on the MkII & III but the McLarens at the time were more straight on and the later shadows where more straight on too.

PS let me have your regular email so I can send them to you when I get them, the event is early June.

If you had posted your request a few days earlier I could have made some photos for you from some of the cars as they are today. Two McLaren M8's a Lola T220 and a March 707 were at the Hockenheim Historics. The supersports will run at the OGP as well. I see what I can do for you.

The museum was the Rosso-Bianco Collection in Aschaffenburg and doesn't exist anymore.
For the layout of the dashboard of the Lolas you could also try to get in contact with Lola themself.

Howdy Sky, my buddy RJC asked me to pass these pics of a 1973 917/30 on to you, I know these are not from a model your specifically looking for but they might help fill some gaps, also try http://forums.autosp...howtopic=111795 there are some 917/10 pics there that might help :-)

hi guys,

thanks for the feedback, i really appreciate it. I'll start at the bottom.

arttidesco, great shot of the 917/30 and also thanks for the link to the 917 thread - i'll grab anything i can once i'm back from work. just had a quick look. nice. especially as i'm looking for the regular le mans 917's as well.
the 917/30 is different (among many other things) in that it is turbo charged and has 2 pressure gauges to the left of the dashboard. in the image above you can see one of the two above the fire extinguisher. the general arrangement of the dials and switches looks close enough. if you could source a real 917/10 that would be even better :)

Duc-Man, ach blast. if i had known about that i would've asked earlier ;) or maybe even gone there myself. any reference images you can get / take are really appreciated. i'll most likely only manage to go to le mans this year, same as last year. i'll try to contact lola as per your suggestion

buckaluck, thanks again. I've sent you my email via pm
i'll check if we're going to do other shadow cars, though as far as i know we're only doing the 71 and 66 seasons (the latter being a bit off for now)

hi buckaluck,

any update? I've taken a break and was working on the sports cars of the 1967 season for another mod about to be released soonish.(chaparral 2D, ford gt40mk2b and ferrari 330p4/412p and helped out a bit on a chaparral 2F), so i'll be back to the canams in a month or so, so any photo is appreciated.

thank you again.

b squared,
saved and stored when you posted it. thanks for that. i'm always amazed when people do drawings like that - even back in the days where CAD/CAM wasn't even around. it baffles my mind - and i'm an engineer, technical draftsman myself.

Hockenheim had a March 707 and a Lola T222 showing but that was far from original. Got a M8C and a Lola T310 yesterday at the Nürburgring.

Friends:

Best source of photos is Pete Lyons' recent book, Can-Am Cars in Detail, published by David Bull Publishing. Not only does it have terrific photographs, but PL describes the cars in great detail--and he was there.
