Searched everwhere but does not seem to be a thread on Historic Group C

So to start with here are some images from last weekend at Le Mans.

Sadly the cars were unable to enjoy a dry track .......however practice was wetter than the race as this shot of Chris Roche surfing in his Tiga GT287 shows

Posted Image

Justin Law was just awesome in the wet practice

Posted Image

However Gary Paerson had the measure of him in the race until a puncture dropped him to third

Posted Image

Which allowed Gareth Evans into second

Bob Berridge claimed he was going to take things easy in his Mercedes C11. He went three abreast into the first corner, spun into the gravel trap, fought back through the field, claimed fastest lap by some eight seconds and had two punctures.

Would like to be around when he is trying ;)

Bob's certainly moved on from the time when he was indecently quick in his FFord Lotus 69. Did he make a Festival Final in the 80's?

He once rang me asking if I could paint a flat hat on his helmet :)

I'll dig out my 1985 Group C photos when I find some time. Here's one to start with. Mosport Park 1985 and the debut of the Jags. Hans Heyer complete with hat to the left.

Was that the ex-Peter Harrington Lotus? If it was, then I'm not surprised it was quick.

Incidentally, do IMSA GTP pictures qualify for this thread? Or is there another one that would be better suited?

I mainly remember Bob Berridge for a one-off drive in the final round of the British GTs at Brands a few years ago, when he punted off one of the championship contenders with a ridiculous move at Paddock UNDER YELLOWS; wondering if he'd done it deliberately and why I never heard of him getting a license endorsement..............

I've got loads of Gp C pics from '82 to '89; one or two might even be worth scanning some time.

2003 in the DeWalt TVR from memory?

The second race meeting I ever went to was the Silverstone 1000km in 1985, and Group C was always a favourite. I'll have to dig a few of my pics out- mostly 1989-92, including a few from Interserie and British C2 races

A couple of random Group C pics I'd already got scanned:

Interserie at Brands in 1990- Walter Lechner's 'Jim Beam' Porsche and Richard Piper's Spice

Donington 1990- the Brun/Jaegermeister Porsche of Bernard Santal/Massimo Sigala

I think this is the ROC, from Le Mans in about 1993ish, that was designed by Chuck Graeminger but funded/run by ROC's Fred Stalder.

No idea, but it's still quick and good looking. Not many of us manage to be like this 25 years after one's prime (with some exceptions, of course!)

Question about the Berridge Mercedes... does anyone know if they achieved their goal of running faster on the Mulsanne than the current P1 cars during the race? I watched the Eurosport broadcast of the group C race and they mentioned he was shooting for 345 KPH or thereabouts, and that he set the fastest lap at 3:44, which is incredibly quick (would have put him mid pack on the P2 grid) considering it was on a very slippery and wet track! The XJR9 is exactly what an endurance sportscar should look and sound like... the later turbo car in Gary Pearson's hands was lovely to look at but the sound was just so uninteresting by comparison. That GTP Spice was massively quick as well until it became one of many cars out with a puncture!

Yes it is a 962 not sure if it was Richard Lloyd Racing or Brittan Lloyd Racing by this time but they started reworking the bodywork in their own way from quite early on as did Joest and several other teams by the end of the 1980's. Might have also has a carbon fiber chassis but I'd be gladly corrected on that point.

The #34 at Sandown was one of the first 962 (105) entered by John Fitzpatrick. The Le Mans #34 was a 956 (102) also owned by JFR, normally seen in Skoal Bandit livery but in Bob Jane colours for the race at Le Mans. Another JFR 956 (110) ran at Silverstone 1984 with Bob Jane livery. So three races with three different cars although owned & run by the same team

An answer to a question started on the Unipart Thread

I think you may be referring to 1988 Ralph. One of the Baker Tigas, the Pink Panther, spun in front of the lead Sauber Merc/Jaguar battle for the lead. Massive incident, it put one Sauber out, and severely delayed the other IIRC. Very spectacular, and amazing that no-one was hurt, driver or spectator. The Tiga carried on after repairs, though it looked a real mess after. A shame cos it spolied the race. I think the Tiga driver was a Yank, one of Roy's rent-a drivers, Stephen Hynes or similar?

As a student I made my way from Leicester by public transport for the day. I wonder if it would be so easy to do these days.
