Quite straightforward really - unless we've made a gigantic blunder we - the contributing Collections - own the original negatives and the original colour transparencies from which the images are scanned. We are the copyright holders.

Clear?

Doug,
Having read the recent proposals on changes to the law surrounding copyright, nothing is clear!

Hence my use of the Albert Haddock signature. ;)

Those who may be unfamiliar with Haddock might like to to peruse Uncommon Law, by A P Herbert. I can't help thinking that there will be an increasing smell of fish in the air. :well:

True - but we keep an eye on it. Concepts such as creative rights, property ownership etc may have become rather inconvenient to some members of the internet generation. But that is nothing that a clip around the earhole wouldn't put right. The attitudes of certain so-called 'democratic' institutions might require further leverage, however... We can always pull up the drawbridge, close the files and prevent anyone else from enjoying these treasures - and learning from the information embodied within them.

Nooooo please nooooo ....

A superb resource. I shall keep revisiting as images are added - please keep us informed of major additions.

I still cling on to the hope that more people may have had a sneaky camera in hand during the early years of my particular interest - Jaguar's XJ13 prototype. Perhaps your still-unpublished collections have some choice images lurking to tempt me to reach for my wallet?

Thanks for sharing this Doug. Wonderful set of pictures.

It's also nice to see photos taken from different places than usual eg those shot at Spa from Haute de la Cote down through the left right kinks before Burnenville rather than the usual Eau Rouge / Raidillon or La Source shots

The Nostalgia Group should be called the British Leyland Promotion Group as it seems that all of the pictures are of BMC/British Leyland cars. Lots of Minis, but what was a Morris Major?

What a wonderful resource!

Photo 436722 needs moving from the 1930s to the 1920s (1922 Targa Florio)

More significantly,

Photo 416243 is NOT an Austin Seven from the Works Team, but is an Austin Twenty - I thnk Col Arthur Waite's Brooklands Car called Sergeant Murphy

...but what was a Morris Major?

A Morris Major (and its twin the Austin Lancer) were based on the Riley/Wolseley 1500. They were made and sold in Australia from 1958 to 64 (with lots of updates as time went on!) They were quite popular at the time.

Doug

There are about 200 pictures in the 1930s section which shouldn't be - mainly 1950s and 1920s. I did start listing them, but I got bored when I reached 120 ...

436721, 436434, 436461, 436445, 436441, 436439, 436437, 436428, 436423, 436416, 436412, 436406, 436399, 436396, 436394, 436393, 436386, 436380, 436373, 436371, 436361, 436345, 436344, 436335, 436331, 436329, 436319, 436175, 436174, 436173, 436172, 436171, 436170, 436169, 436168, 436165, 436164, 436163, 436161, 436160, 436159, 436155, 436153, 436152, 436151, 436148, 436147, 436146, 436145, 436144, 436143, 436142, 436141, 436140, 436139, 436138, 436136, 436135, 436134, 436133, 436132, 436131, 436130, 436129, 436128, 436127, 436126, 436125, 436124, 436123, 436122, 436121 ...

A few captions:

437359: captioned as "probably Lang". Driver is wearing a dark wind cap: Bäumer perhaps?

436711: captioned as "1939 Maserati Team, 8CTF." I think this is probably early 1940 when Nuvolari was announced as going to drive at Tripoli for Maserati. The car is actually a 4CL and Nuvolari is prominent in the centre behind it with perhaps Cortese in the cockpit. There's a picture which looks to be the same occasion - with Nuvolari and Villoresi - on the Monaco Grand Prix Library website:

http://monaco-grands...E/Maserati.html

436662: captioned as an 8CTF. Actually Marazza's 6CM.

436515: captioned as 1939. Actually 1929.

436413: captioned as a 6CM. This time it is an 8CTF!

435841: Official opening of Crystal Palace circuit on April 22nd 1937. There was a family photo album which turned up at Ten-Tenths last year which includes a picture taken at almost exactly the same moment! The car in the picture is Earl Howe's and he's about to set out on a ceremonial lap. 435784 is the same occasion.

Much of the working captioning was actually reworked by the website technies to adapt it to a 'common metadata style'. Is that right? In conjunction with some BS perpetrated many years ago when the negs were first scanned - by an ailing Geoff Goddard - there is a problem - which will progressively be ironed out. We promise. Please don't spend too much time identifying misfits which are obvious to us...but we really do appreciate the information from those who have already done so, on our behalf.

As an aside...............A few years Philip was reunited with Alan's 1955 Lotus 6 which he saw driving on the road near Chelmsford. An approach to the then owner produced a ...'you can first refusal..'.............years later the chap was good to his word and Philip paid ( a high price ) for it.

I've just visited the Motorgraphs site for the first time in a while, to find it now seems only to include the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust archive. Does anyone know where the other archives, especially GP Library, have gone? I tried the old GP Library link, and it appears to be defunct. Under normal circumstances I'd be hoping for an answer from Sir Douglas of Farnham himself, but he doesn't seem to have checked in here since the software upgrade. :well:

I believe Sir Douglas of Farnham was last seen in the Falklands Islands Tim, maybe he is on the slow boat back.

Here is a response from Motorgraphs re GPL

I am sorry due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to separate the archives, as you can see this site is now for the British Heritage Archive. However we are working on a new Historic Motor Sport site, which will include GPL as well as other archives plus more.

We will contact you once this is live.

Hope it is not too long!

Someone has just posted in the Collectables forum asking about the GP Library. I'm wondering if Doug, or anyone, can tell us the latest situation.

See my post, and Mike Bennett's, above, Doug - we don't know how to find you! Is this new Historic Motor Sport site available yet?

Edit: I've now read your reply to the question in the Collectables forum, for which many thanks.
