There is a picture of an Escort over at Jalopnik that is crying out to be ID'd

Anyone have a clue about Where, When, Why, Who and What?

If that's for real (and it looks slightly wrong to me), then it's the photographer who has the balls of steel.

I think the "where" is a Rally of Portugal.
I seem to recall seeing a similar picture of a works Escort from the late 70s

Mauro Silva was No19 on Rally of Portugal in 1982. He finished 6th overall. The picture in your link is probably on a rally in Portugal but not on the Rally of Portugal.

Yes, I remember that too. Can anyone find that picture? It was even more extreme than this one IIRC

.................and a similar photo depicting a works 131 Abarth too, hope someone has some old MNs to scan..................I reckon it is around the 1979 period.

Sterling is probably correct that the "definitive" photo of Waldegard or Mikkola (1st and 2nd in 79?) at that spot is 1979 (when the cars carried the colours Will Onions' car is painted in for the current BHRC, plus a large Castrol name on the bonnet). I've a feeling the ultimate photo is Ford copyright but there will be others from other years. (TAP Rally of course, none of this FIA-inspired "Rally of ..." then).

Ford's 79 WRC colours (less Castrol letters) are on Will Onions' car in the BHRC, here at scrutineering in Welshpool for the first round, the Bulldog Rally (it won the second round, the Pirelli Rally in Kielder). The shades of blue are the correct ones.

Thanks to areilladou over at forum auto.com we have a Works Escort POO 505 R on the same bridge, but for a really spectacular photo check half way down this thread and you'll see just how brave the photographer who took the photo at the top of our thread really was !

My memory is so poor these days, I thought it was the cars carrying the BA logos................

BA was a one off for Ford on the Waldegard 77 RAC winning car only. Later on of course BA were on the works TR7V8s.

Having worked out it's Waldegard in 79, I then quote your post and find it shows up above...
Moronic is the word that comes more to mind than brave, particularly bearing in mind TAP/Portugal 86...

POO505R was also on the 77 TAP in Clark's hands....but if you believe it was the same car...

It was the same rear number plate (probably) - how much more do you want?
