Who was Alfred Neubauer, and what was he like?

Actually Karl Kling became Neubauer's successor. He was head of the Mercedes motorsport department until 1968. So he is defintely a candidate for your role as Mercedes F1 team boss in the 60s.

 

BTW it is a myth that Mercedes wasn't involved in racing after 1955. They still did some rallying and touring car races afterwards. And this quite successfully.

And there was the whole DB episode of involvement with George Tilp and his US sports car program.

Do you think he ever came into contact with Herr Altbauer of the Schnocedes team?

I believe Altbauer tried to sell him some racing overalls...

 

You know, the type with the pockets in the centre?
