I am trying to ascertain the complete finishing order for this event from 50 years ago.

In the Graham Howard book "The official 50 race history of the Australian Grand Prix", it lists 25 entrants with a start grid diagram containing 14 of these. The results list 10 finishers with a note regarding 4 other finishers for whom insufficient information for the order that these 4 finished to be determined. These 4 are listed as Max Williams, Keith Russell, George Jamieson and Joe Bonenti.

I have a programme for this event and it tantalisingly lists the first 10 finishers too - but doesn't list the others.

Does anyone have a complete Lowood AGP starting and finishing results list?

The Grid as shown in Graham's book with the finishing position in brackets

Alec Mildren Cooper Maserati (1)
Bib Stillwell Cooper Climax (3)
Lex Davison Aston Martin (2)
Noel Hall Cooper Climax (5)
Frank Matich Lotus 15
Glynn Scott Cooper Clmax (7)
Arnold Glass Maserati 250F (6)
Stan Jones Maybach Corvette
Jon Leighton Cooper Climax (4)
Charlie whatmore Lotus 11 Climax T/C (8)
Keith Russell MGTC
Mel McEwin Tornado Corvette (9)
Max Williams MGTC
Noel Barnes MGTC (10)

Reitirements Stan Jones and Frank Matich

And a note saying no information yet available for start positions or practice times for both Joe Bonenti MGTF and George Jamieson Lotus 11 Climax.

:)
Graham makes another remark that the indication is that all 3 MGTC specials finished a great result for MG in their last ever appearance in an AGP - timely in that this coming weekend the HSRCA is focasing on early MGs and cars from this era.

I've got to contact Don Thallon, I'll put the question to him...

Otherwise, I'm sure the answer will be found somewhere in Queensland. Lionel Ayers?

There is another possibility... that is that the other four didn't complete sufficient distance (66%?) to be qualified as finishers.

I have a feeling that Scott Mackay has already been down this path and may well have the answers. I will ask him and report back - I am fairly sure he does not lurk here on TNF.

What a shame!

I was in Tamworth over the weekend and I could have easily dropped in on Claire Russell and asked if she had any paperwork on the event.

In September this year it is 50 years to the day since the John Hough Cooper Maserati fatal accident occurred at Lowood and on Sept 9th the Hough family and Neil McLeod of the nearby Lockrose museum are holding a comemmoration with a host of people from that era attending.

More details later but I will be attending as it is also a significant date for me, 50 years since my first race meeting, at Lowood and in a Humpy Holden would you believe.

Hi Dick, you look far too young to have been racing for 50 years! Congratulations.

Hi Shane, I started young ! but I had to wait until I was 21 as my mother wouldn't sign the entry form beforehand.

Scott tells me that he did research this race but was unable to find any more than what Graham had published. Does anyone have an official results sheet?

Dick,

Congratulations on 50 years of motorsport ...

I do envy all you guys that were out there making the history for the cars we now enjoy. Never was exposed close enough to the action to start at a young age - then shift work from age 19 then all my working life pretty much stopped organized weekend activities. trying to make up for that now!

Enjoyed your newsletter yet again, must teach you how to post a photo or two in there, all the photographers will give you heaps of material ...

So enjoy the Lowood commemorations. Lowood was my Eleven's home patch and competed there 14 times.

kind regards

Ed

Had the same problem [1961..I was 20], when my mother read the entry form. "Why do they want to know your blood group....you said it wasn't dangerous?", mum queried.

That took some explaining, I tell you.
