You're shouting again, Ron :)

I'll see what photos I can find, but it might take me a day or two

In the meantime, some background for any non-Kiwis who might be looking in -

New readers begin here –

By the mid 1960s, there were those who believed that NZ saloon racing was getting out of hand, with the likes of twincam-engined Morris Minors and Farina A40s, Corvette-powered Mk2 Zephyrs and 105E Anglias and even Renault Dauphines, etc etc, and in some isntances bodywork the cars' mothers wouldn't have recognised

Accordingly, the authorities ruled that “allcomers”, as we called them, should be banned, and replaced from the 1968 season by FIA GpV, a much more attractive proposition to manufacturers

This brought a backlash from those who saw that racing even a 1000cc Mini in GpV spec was an expensive exercise, and that there should be a place for Kiwi ingenuity to continue to find expression in saloon racing, and thus was the OSCA series born prior to the 1972 season. Engine swaps would still be permitted, but a ‘silhouette’ formula would soon be introduced to ensure that bodywork remained much closer to the original than had been allowed in the days of allcomers.

It started in the South Island, and although a North Island series was added, it never really took off there, being replaced in due course by a separate Sports Sedan class

As North Island spectator I used to wish we'd seen more of those cars on our tracks. They looked wild and exciting.

 hi redneb..Thank you for your kind words..Further to davids inteligent comments,, we needed to do something down in the south island to make it worthwhile to build and race better and faster saloons..So as the n.z. motorsport assn preferred to back single seater racing as the premium championship ..we set up our own regulations and with the support of the south island race promotors ..a field of up to 40 cars and drivers entered for the first season....Better prize money..three capacity classes.. with points and prize money down to 15 th place.....so 40 years later osca is still running successfully...i under stand that the other motorsport mystro...allan dick ..of nz classic driver magazine has an article regarding osca in the latest edition..perhaps allan may have some good photos for the osca anniversary.that we can use..any other comments ....(or critics ) r.mc.phail

i under stand that the other motorsport mystro...allan dick ..of nz classic driver magazine has an article regarding osca in the latest edition

You're presumably referring to his story about travelling NZ with Kevin Haig during the 1974 season
I think the accompanying photos are all from Terry Marshall

Hi all, for those of you who dont know I am organising the 40th anniversary of OSCA for next year. Lady Wigram meeting at end of October 2011 will have approx 25 cars that used to compete in the 70'sand 80's and then we are having 2 more rounds at Teretonga and Levels.
Keep in touch if you want info as there will be a large function in Chch that weekend in true OSCA fashion....(lots of piss and even more lies and stories) my email is evanmunt@hotmail.com or if you know of any cars hidden away.
I'll write up a list soon of the cars expected to attend.
Cheers Evan
