One of the joys of having been involved with the Atlantic series on this side of the pond in the '70s was the amount of sliding that I got to see.

There may well be more already in my Atlantic set that I'm forgetting. There will definitely be more added to this set as time goes on.

I won't be posting it here for obvious copyright reasons, but the "Parting Shot" in the latest issue of Motorsport is very good.

Some Tim Blackburn photos, previously posted, demonstrating drift of one sort or another, all taken at Paddock Hill Bend 1974...

Perhaps a shade too much opposite lock exhibited in some of these, but I hope you will allow some indulgence here..

Having managed my first two posts on TNF in the last 20 minutes(after months of reading it) I feel emboldened to add my two penn'orth on this topic too.

I am surprised that none of you learned folk have quoted none other than Sir Stirling himself. On one of those excellent "Petrolheads" evenings that Channel 4 did probably 10 or more years ago there is a film of a very young Stirling explaining to Raymond Baxter with the aid of a steerable model car and a bar top that conveniently turns through 90 degrees, how to execute a 4 wheel drift.

I don't do shorthand, but after playing the video about 10 times (Oops ! am I supposed to confess to having taped it? I know we are sensitive about copyright on here) this is pretty close to what he says:

SM: Come in normally, and steer normally to go round the bend like that, then just as you get before the bend put the brakes on, just a little bit, not very hard, which tends to break the back away
RB: And the front wheels slide a little too?
SM: Yes but not quite as much. Then just as it starts to break away straighten the car up, not normal correction, and a the same time put your foot hard on the accelerator which then gets the car drifting
RB: All 4 wheels go sideways across the road ? (here the wheels of the model appear to be all pointing straight ahead, as far as one can see on this ancient film)
SM: Yes
RB: Then hold her in the drift with the throttle and very delicate steering.
SM There's very little... you have a slight feel on the steering wheel but not much

So there you have it ... simple ! I wish I could do it.

The interesting bit for me, which the great man does not explain, is how you go from following a circular path with all 4 wheels pointing straight ahead, to going down the straight with all 4 wheels pointing straight ahead.

Regards, Steve

friction - the sideways movement subsides and forward drive takes over - often get a little oversteer as you get back into full throttle - in my humble opinion

Just before you reach the edge of the road on exit, a tiny tweak of opposite lock kills the slide and away you go, accompanied by loud applause from assembled multitude, and even more applause inside your head for having accomplished the final step in becoming a driver...............

Being impecunious, I have had to make do with some indifferent cars over the years, but the Opel Manta GTE could be steered on the throttle in this manner (Always assuming you were going fast enough to start with), great fun.
