The first photo quiz of the festive season (DCN - please can we have another of yours?)
All from 1974 and for those of you south south of Stoke-on-Trent, I apologise for the northern bias but that's where most of my photos were taken in those days.

Now there's a surprise, Pete :) Yes, you win a tube of Aqua-Jel for your trouble.
The story so far..
1, 2, 3, 6 and 10 answered correctly. No. 8 half-right, and no. 9 driver correctly identified. Well done - I thought nos. 3 and 10 might have hung around a little longer.

Or for knowing that at least two of them were taken at Aintree? And some of the others at Oulton? :p

I thought José Espirito Santo was Portuguese, whereas the logos on the car suggest that the driver is Brazilian. Santo's car in 1973 had the striking "Shaft" livery - I'm not sure if he ws still sponsored by them in '74. '74 was a thin year for F3 in the UK, so there weren't many Brazilians driving. It's clearly a March, and the fact that the exhaust is on the left suggests that it isn't a Pinto-engined car. José Chateaubriand drove a Toyota-engined March in 1974, but I thought it was a works car, and therefore not run by Peter Bloore...

I don't think number 4 is an Ensign F3. Could it be the Roosters Ford of David Winstanley?

I'd go with Cyd Williams for number 9. Was his entrant Graham Eden?

Neve and Joubert were certainly Shellsport team-mates at the 1974 Race of Champions meeting, according to my programme.

Ah, but all you had to do there was put "Bruce McLaren" or "Chris Amon" down randomly and by the law of averages you'd get one right eventually! :p

I haven't read any of the answers, Alan - primarily because I've broken my glasses - and it's much more fun just having a go in any case!

Irrespective, wonderful pictures. Quite wonderful. God, I wish I could go back to those days.

Here goes then;

1.Thompson, some Yorkshire chap, hillclimbing family/thing
2. Chris Meek
3. Douglas Thom(p)son - Scottish personage/Formula Atlantic
4. Kim Mather
5. Lionel Friedrich
6. Gordon Smiley
7. No idea
8. Robert Joubert and his team mate was Patrick Neve
9. Cyd Williams
10. The helmet and colours say P-F Rousselot (spelling?). But did he race a 733?

All questions now answered - Well done Mark, you have finally filled in the answer to question 4 - Kim with his Brabham BT38. Well done, too, to Cirrus for completing question 9.

To Summarise:
1. Jim Thompson
2. Chris Meek
3. Doug Thompson. F.Atlantic GRD 273
4. Kim Mather
5. Leonel Friedrich
6. Gordon Smiley
7. John (Cooper Metals) Cooper
8. Robert Joubert. Team-mate Patrick Neve*
9. Cyd Williams. Entrant: Graham Eden
10. Pierre-François Rousselot

* Being pedantic, Ian, you had the pairing correct but listed Neve as the guy pictured.
Anyone fancy any more?

Ah!

Yes, please! That's my era, even if I was only sixteen. Much further oop north would suit me better!

Interestingly , I dug out some Autosports from 1974, after I had answered of course, and found that although some of us look back on this as a golden era, F.Atlantic and F3 were getting a hard time in the reports and editorials from one reporter in particular. Too expensive, dead-end formula, small grids etc. Of course some categories did have small grids and it was during the fuel crisis. If i remember correctly, we were lucky to have any racing at all that year. Cheers Ian

p.s. no p in either Thomson apparently

David, Allan and Pete, I think you had to be going to modern club events in the north in the early 1970s to stand much chance of a full house here - Oh, sorry Pete, you were :p
Ian, you are right, of course, 1974 was a very poor year for F3 especially. Sorry I don't have anything from Croft/Rufforth/Ingliston.

P.S. Allen - I thought you might have spotted Doug Thompson and Kim Mather

If you mean me in that PS, never heard of either of them!
I went to lots of club events from 1958 on, but not in t'north. By the 1970s, as I was too involved at work, I only went to the club events I was, or might be, handicapping and I had no interest in the "club single-seater" (formulas Ford/V/3/4) racing anyway.

(Might be Brian McGuire, though)

PS: Sorry, I missed your sign-off. I'll try again:

I don't think No.9 is Allan McCully, but I'm prepared to conceded that it might be his one-time team-mate Brian McGuire

Isn't that Bob Muir, David? (number 9)

In any case, number 2 is Tony Brise's Montesa Motorcycles F3 Brabham BT38, his wife to be stood to the side.

And, yes, I reckon it's our French friend P-F Rousselot again in the blue GRD. (number 6)
