[Marc Sproule]

I've discovered that I have a few images from that event but haven't been able to find an entry list/results sheet.

I can identify some of the riders but I want to make sure that I correctly label the images that I will eventually post on my flickr photostream.

Would anyone be able to help?

I'll post the links to the images here when I get them uploaded.

Skip Aksland won, Gene Romero was second and Barry Sheene completed the podium. I have the numbers for them.

Marc, if you find a way to post your pics directly in this thread before you put them out on flick , I doubt many would remain unidentified

You'll find a fairly good article by Norm deWitt on this race, in the current issue of "Classic Racer" - not that I in any way wish to contribute to the ongoing size of Malc Wheeler's ego

So far all I've found is a handful of images on one roll. The only image I haven't been able to identify is #61. I'm guessing whoever that was wasn't a major player.

It will be sometime before the images get scanned. I'm working part-time in the real world and on two other picture projects and those have to be done before I can get to other stuff.

i will be surprised if I find any more bike images, I was there to shoot cars and didn't even recall that the bikes were there that weekend.

You'll find a fairly good article by Norm deWitt on this race, in the current issue of "Classic Racer" - not that I in any way wish to contribute to the ongoing size of Malc Wheeler's ego

It's got to the stage that the only reason I buy it is because I have every issue from No 1.

There is, very occasionally, a good article - say every 4/5 months.

It has, however, turned into an ego trip for Mr Wheeler, who elbowed aside a very good Editor in order to get his own rear in the seat.

He also disposed of several good guest columnists, including Bill Swallow and Tommy Robb, as well as Charlie Williams.

I think that I'll probably abandon it, as I did "Motor Sport" after Jenks stopped his Formula One reports.

Good point Larry, if I recall he punted Tommy Robb to replace him with Charlie Williams, for a more modern feel, and presumably to attract a later generation of reader. But I don't recall Charlie doing more than a couple of columns anyway. And I did used to enjoy Bill Swallow, as he didn't suffer fools yet was a tough, gritty racer. There's also the the matter of "the older I get, the better I was" with Wheeler...

I've never consciously gone through it, and of course you can't just re-invent history to keep the old-time articles coming, but I've always thought the mag could do with a bit more technical stuff in it.

Wonder what the circulation is now, compared to 10 years ago ?

Classic Racer has always been a niche publication and has never enjoyed a wide advertiser/circulation base. It never really drew enough ad revenue or sold in high enough numbers for original owner Emap to justify throwing huge resources at it. I guess that remains the case today, even though it no longer has to contribute to Emap's huge overheads.

Marc, although this was not an AMA championship event, I would assume ( but that's only an assumption ...) that the locals would have been using their usual AMA numbers as long as they were not conflicting with some european VIP's prefered numbers. For what it's worth, AMA # 61 in 1977 was a gentleman called Bob Wakefield, a decent competitor in US national races but maybe not a "major player" as you rightly guessed.

Thanks Philippe, so far that covers the images I've discovered. I'm still buried scanning images that have more priority so it's still going to be some time before I get around to these.

I think I'm the only freelancer in the history of freelance journalism to be fired...

I did loads of stuff for Classic Racers sister mag, Classic Motorcycle Mechanics in 2010. Well I did until Mr Wheeler sent his henchman around to tell me I was fired after one of my pieces of work appeared in MCN.
