Michael Oliver: Chuck Jones says he may have been mistaken about the picture of Clay in the Lola being taken at Kent. He says it could very well have been Brands Hatch.

I can confirm that the photo below was taken at Brands Hatch.

How? Because I took it.

Chuck Jones Lancer Lola at the Downtown Elkhart Lake Street parade

That is Sylvia Wilkinson by the car. Sylvia and John Morton stopped by to visit with us at the event.

Ike Smith and Doug MacCorkindale are also in the picture and they were working on the car that weekend.

This car was restored by the crew at Toluca Lake Restorations under the guidance of Chuck Jones.

Lilo Zicron and Dave Jacobs were the owners at that time.

They were kind enough to let Ike Smith and Doug MacCorkindale help on the car.

The Jerry Eisert turbo Chev powered USAC car was pretty much untested unit, I seem to remember Jerry with it at Indy in May 1970, but little was seen of it. The pose picture was at the rear of Jerry's shop in Costa Mesa.  My involvement with the car was, after being bumped at the '70 Indy race. I had pretty much decided to call it quits with racing ovals until Chuck Jones rang me with an invite to have a lash at Ontario in the inaugural event. Naturally enough I accepted the drive. Long story short we went there with me as a virtual rookie on ovals and I found the car a handful to say the least. What it needed was an experienced oval driver to give proper feed back to Jerry. Progress was hampered with massive engine woes and with no spares readily to hand the project was curtailed. Chuck and Jerry helped in being able to have me steer the Lloyd Ruby back-up car. A big responsibility or me at the time as Lloyd hadn't decided which of the two cars he would qualify, so my early laps in practice were very cautious. I did qualify, engine failed part way into the race, though. I have to say the times spent with Chuck and Jerry were among the most treasured events in my 40 odd years as a race driver. RIP both mates. :(
