Eleven plus the driver...

The half a head, I will suggest, is someone with their torso in the left side of the cockpit. There's a third guy on the right side of the car with his hand in the air and nothing else visible, there are seven hats on the left side of the car.

8, 9, 10, 11 whatever - not surprising that there were a lot of them on the car - it had 7 drivers in that race: Elliot Forbes-Robinson, John Schneider, Rob Dyson, John Paul Jr (15 years after his first win in 1982 with his father and Rolf Stommelen), Butch Leitzinger, Andy Wallace & James Weaver

Now that would be something to get the 7 DRIVERS as well it would have really been scrapping along the road.

Sorry to say I've misplaced the original of this photo of Brian Redman in No. 1 giving a lift to a blue-suited driver. Long Beach F5000 1975.

My guess after looking at results and pics from the Inaugural Long Beach F5000, race the answer is........David Hobbs "Getting A Lift " after running out off fuel on the last lap.

I don't know if this question wasn't already posted, but... in the sixties, wouldn't you burn your bum if you sat down on the back? Is that why some of the chaps are standing up?

Davison might not have been feeling much pain....His gearbox failed just near the Pub early in the race.

I don't know if this counts but back in the late 1950s I had an arrangement with Jim Clark and Innes Ireland that if I was marooned out on the circuit such as at aintree shown here. I would give the thumbs sign from the side of the track on the last lap and on the slowing down lap they would stop and pick me up to get me back to the pits. On this occasion it was when Innes won the sports car race at the British Grand Prix at Aintree with the DT Lotus 19. Sadly health and safety might frown on this today.

Well being a TNFer has lots of privileges but your preempted "Getting A Lift" must be the best we had so far.
Well Done Graham  nothing like having people in high places as friends.

These modern cars have decent seating, a footrest [floor] and plenty of hand grips. Ideal for passenger service. Fernando looks quite comfortable there. Though I still would like to know the repercussions!
Though he is defenitly not color coordinated!

The famous one: Mansell gives Senna a lift back to the paddock on the Victory Lap of the 1991 British Grand Prix:

I recall stories at the time to the effect that Ayrton had made a point of memorising some of the details of the Williams' instrumentation and gizmos, and duly reported the information back to the McLaren engineers! Mansell even received some criticism for supposedly allowing a rival to "spy" in this way....!

Bringing the sport into disrepute would be a pretty difficult thing to do these days. The difficulty would lie in the verb 'bringing' Then there's the use of the noun 'sport'...

Amazingly there were no sanctions! It happened at the end of the race: Alonso stopped on the circuit because the team thought he was low on fuel for the mandatory post-race sample and Webber kindly stopped to pick him up. The FIA later issued a po-faced statement saying that Webber would not face any sanctions for stopping on the return to the pits to pick Alonso up - even though it could have been viewed as a breach of the rule requiring cars to proceed directly to parc ferme. Presumably, Alonso was guilty of that crime too.

I'm surprised that there have been no comments on the Trevor Harris photo - it certainly made me laugh. I seem to have run out of F1 examples but here's another Daytona 24 hour winner, this time from 1971.
Jackie Oliver is at the wheel of the winning JW Automotive Gulf-Porsche 917 and Pedro Rodriguez is on top with various mechanics, including Ermanno Cuoghi (right front wing), author of Racing Mechanic.

Left to right :
(1) Hat with someone making bunny ears above it,
(2) No hat half behind door,
(3) Hat and chest medallion,
(4) Hat and flag,
(5) Under the flag waver's arm, no hat and moustache,
(6) Hat with a hand holding a hat growing out of his head

Oh, and the driver makes 7

Either way, the car would be down on the bump stops.

If there is another person behind (2) and (3) and I'm right about another person on the right, that's nine in total. I might be wrong but I think I see at least five legs hanging over the right hand side of the car and I doubt Jake The Peg was part of the crew.

Elly actually drove herself: http://petrolhead.tu...advices-to-elly

Mercedes Benz had a specially-adapted W125 two-seater, which was used to shoot a propaganda film at the 1939 Eifelrennen meeting. In breaks between filming the team drivers were allowed to give joyrides on it: I know Caracciola took Neubauer out and Seaman took Erica, but if anyone has any other details (or any photos) ...;)
