Nice try but the catch is the front runners were by and large unknown. Just to up the anti Rod Scyvier has agreed to stump up the prize money for this little competition and take colour photos of the very lucky prize winner who will recieve an all expenses night out in Soho with Chris Carter !

Pete Hubbard no 35 Chris Thorne no 2 (which I guess is you sponsored by Mick Grant) by the way I always looked out for you with the Mick Grant conection

What a great competitor, I recall beating him at Olivers Mount, as we came back to the paddock he slapped my back and congratulated me, swear to god I had a rash from his "gentle patting". I only beat him cos he was riding a number of bikes as usuall and the Honda was tricky clutch wise so he suffered a little.
Phil Mellor RIP

Chris

Chris

Absolutely right about Phil - great rider and great guy. He used to come up and race in Scotland just when I was starting racing, and he always set a great pace so I learned a lot from him. Always rode a huge variety of bikes on the same day. I am sure he had a 125 Honda, 250 & 350 TZs and an RG 500 at one stage. Did he win the Honda 125 championship one year?

PS I did the Honda championship when it was air cooled (1979?). My second year of racing so it was a 'baptism of fire' up against the 'famous' riders who did the series. It was a good cheap series. Also remember rumours of bikes running meths or alchohol in the later years of the series??

The MT used loads of road bike bits and bobs probably more than the RS. Both had MX engines. For all its worth both put up some brilliant times and on TT100's.
I used to wear the rear a little on the right side then change it round and wear a little bit more off, then pop it on the front and repeat the procedure. Not that I was tight you understand.....but the TT100 had too much tread depth, that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I would like to post two pics, taken at Olivers Mount so not a Honda championship round. The first is of the great all rounder Phil Mellor and the second of much underated 250cc rider Pete Hubbard. (don't think much of that pleb they are about to lap) They were good friends of mine and came to my wedding as did Rod Scivyer, I think I have a very rare picture of the latter buying a round of drinks, maybe not !
