'... WON THE F5000 SERIES IN ENGLAND BY ALLAN JONES.'

Not quite - Jones won one race in it, but not the series. Old Racing Cars has a fuller history of the car on their Lola T330 page - scroll down to HU2:

But don't you know?

'Race' and 'series' are almost inevitably interchangeable these days...

Ray is right about the interchangeability of 'series' and 'race'.

We have a former F5000 racer in NZ, who won one Gold Star race, now telling people he was Gold Star champion...

A very common occurrence, just like fish stories. Especially prevalent in race car ads and gatherings of old farts.

e-Bay seems like a very unlikely forum in which to place such an advertisement but, hey, what do I know?

What on earth has all of this to do with a Lola on sale on e-Bay?!?! :well:

The terms "Grand Prix Champion" "Formula one champion" have been used with similar abandon in the media in reference to just about anyone who's ever started an F1 race.
A happy world these people live in - there is no need to be a race winner to be one of these "champions"

Meantime I am crossing everything this weekend in the hope enough lotto balls appear to let me buy that Lola! :smoking:

Yep, see that all the time. Related is the annoying (to me, but I am easily annoyed) practice of the US promoters and especially race announcers to call the winner of the previous year's edition of any given race, "last year's champion". Champion? Last year's winner to be sure, but 'champion'?

It's called a tangent - this place is full of them. You've possibly indulged yourself...
