Hi Ron. I was starting to get worried about you -thought you might have drowned in the floods. Polly wouldn't dream of touching that nasty Red Bull muck, but she's had a good swig of brandy and is raring to go. :stoned:

1. Bathurst
2. Southbridge

8. Sprague/Leonard (Victor 3.3), McPhail/Collins (Valiant), Thomson/Rimmer (Valiant)

I'll let someone else have a go at 9 and 10 first...

And they can do the F1 questions as well....

Q3 : If I interpret your comments right - none. Rained off twice

Q10 : #5 Jack Tutton XK 120 ,#88 Ron Roycroft XK 120, #? Jack Tucker /Ford V8 Spl, #8 Halsey Logan/ Logan Spl,#44? George Smith/ GCS, #1 Frank Shuter V8 spl, . These are the front 6 on the grid, reading from left in photo. The rest would be total guesswork, although the car with the split windscreen at the very back could be R.Beach / Bentley.

1. Bathurst... but only for one or two years...

Thurgoona-Wirlinga was this way for all three years it was used, so it's a more valid response.

Ron, I suggest you point out to your compatriots that the part of Bananaland in which you live isn't in the north or in the Brisbane River Valley.

Gavin's right - there were only ten races in the 1970 CanAm Championship, and McLaren won nine of them (Hulme 6; Gurney 2; Gethin 1). The other race was Tony Dean's famous win at Road Atlanta in the Porsche 908.

12. Utilevan?

question 8...(do i dare suggest )?? wrong year ?

You do. I was looking at the 1970 season, ie 1969/70. It fools me every time

The race that was actually held in 1970 (at the start of the 1970/71 season :) ) was also won by Leonard/Sprague, this time in a Valiant, from Emson/Bremner (Fiat 125) and Francevic/Borich (Falcon)

McPhail was doing his thing in a Datsun that time...

Q10 : the car with the split windscreen at the very back could be R.Beach / Bentley.

More like Ran Macdonald in his Riley convertible, I suggest

The No.9 MG is Sybil Lupp's TD
28 is Rob Shand's Railton Light Sports (ex-Charles Follett)
No.3 behind the MG is Duncan Rutherford's Willys midget

If there's another I'd be surprised, Ron...

Except that there was a meeting at Towac where the breakup of the surface led to that circuit finishing the day as part bitumen and part gravel.

NSW Circuits it couldn't be as they were all bitumen of some kind:

Warwick Farm
Catalina Park
Amaroo Park
Oran Park
Wakefield Park
Eastern Creek
Gnoo Blas
Nowra - either circuit there as far as I know
Mt Druitt - either airstrip only or airstrip plus run up and down the hill
Parramatta Park

Couldn't be because I don't reckon they were:

Marsden Park (it was either all sealed or all gravel, not sure which)

So does that leave Ringwood or Tomago as a possiblity?

Well, although I can't necessarily identify them from the photo, I could add Sharman in his V8 Special (as in the other photo), Wally Darrell (ACE), Alec Ferguson (RA), Geoff Roud (MG TC), Douglas Haigh (Ford 10 special) and the Blackburn so-called Cooper 500, possibly driven by Vic of that ilk but more likely by his daughter Nola

7 - 1952. As stated in the other thread, this was the only year (before 1956) that the Mairehau feature was started from a grid, rather than on a handicap basis. I'm sure the photo shows the line-up for the race

Regarding your four missing names: Arnold Stafford (Cooper 500), Des Wild (Allard), Russell Beach (Bentley 4½), Del Drewery (Singer Special) and Noel Ching (Singer Le Mans) were all non-starters

Q 12 - Was this a Morris Z Van? - seems to have been the UK name for it. I remember a character called Jerry Madden who ran a mobile fishmonger business using one of these on Auckland's N.Shore when I was a kid. He reminded me of "Unhygenix" and his wife "Bacteria" - fishmongers in the Asterix the Gaul books, and his Morris Van was in similar condition.

...6..how much for a new VW.1200.. in nz..1970..(have a guess ...first to the nearest $100...) ?

...1..finally...I read about a nsw race track..part bitumen..part shingle...many moons ago...7.2 mile...11.6 kms...
....when the race was on..one side of the road was raced on..the other side of the road was open to traffic..
...the track had a hairpin bend ..long straight...tricky turns...and a water crossing too !!
...the circuit closed in 1938..!!

Just one thing, Ron old chap...

Was it for bikes or cars or both?

If cars only, I feel sure I've already given the answer.

Perhaps Vale?

Near Bathurst?

So, is the answer " One at Bathurst, anyway"?

Problem: I suspect the Perthville Straight was not initially tarred. I believe the whole circuit was dirt, including the Perthville Straight.

Yes, John, the closing date certainly fits with the Vale circuit...

And I can just imagine racing going on on one side of the road as any traffic heading through drove down the other side along the railway line there.

But that was for bikes only, cars never ran there. Except you and I, of course, and I had Denis Watt as my eyes-on-stalks passenger!

 Hi john medley and ray bell..

I hope you gentle men of a certain age.....don.t consider me in the least bit tricky...!!!

ray ..i checked back and i can.t see an answer .....similar to ....old vale circuit...vale circuit..vale or even ..o.v.c...

so while david got a point for bathurst...and you got a point for your fine collection of n.s.w. race tracks...

..i am sure you have no objection for john medley receiving a point for......vale....!!! well done....

cars ..and..or motor cycles...the article i read was from the australian classic car magazine..nov..2010..page 66..

yes..bitumen at start line for 100 yards..the rest dirt.....( tricky ) don.t know if they ever raced cars there ..i tried to attend the final

meeting in 1938..but i was only 6 months old..(and i had just had an accident in my drawers ) !!

...(can some one please have a go at the nz retail price of a new 1970 vw car..so i can wrap this quiz up..before i get attacked )

and the impending evening thunder storm threatens to fry my lap top...(please note that all of my tricky comments were given with love ) !!

And you naturally won't have, Ron...

I had assumed you meant a circuit for cars, but the thought of the Vale circuit was with me when I asked about bikes. No doubt that helped young John come to mention it.

 Hi thanks for joining us..that great photo is the 1952 mairehau nz road race..
I am lucky to have original 16 mm movies of those races..fun to go over them..
..i drove an xk 120 once ..for 20 meters..belonged to a friend..it was in line..at ruapuna race track..
.due to go out for practice..and required to be driven forward to close the gap.. i got into the empty seat.drove forward
..20 meters leaving a gap of a metre (i thought ) but when i checked..there was less than one inch gap..long noses on
those xk 120 s..almost cost me a lot of money..hav.nt driven one since.!!

The photo was taken early in 1952. Roycroft's XK120 had been landed just a few months earlier, Tutton's a year before
The GeeCeeEss on the front row was at this stage just over a year old, the Shuter car over the driver's left shoulder two years old, and the No.8 Logan Special the same. MG TDs were fairly new then, but the Railton was pre-war

Okay, Ron... it's up to you...

But if it's a bike track, for heaven's sake, tell us it's a bike track! I knew the Vale circuit was a good chance, but didn't go there because I thought the quiz was about car racing.

And, for the record, the Thurgoona-Wirlinga circuit (1938-1940) is about that length, had a section where through traffic drove alongside the track (but didn't share the road) and had some dips that could have contained water.

Just ask John...
