Hi Chaps

It seems to be the week for people to approach me for information. I have received this requets from a TV production company.

"I’m writing with regards to a historical documentary that we are currently working on; the case of Ruth Ellis. With that in mind, we’re looking to speak with people who remember Soho and the London clubs in the 1950’s where Ruth spent time with motor Racer David Blakely (e.g. The Steering Wheel Club / Carrolls / The Little Club) and/or went to motor racing events where David Blakely attended (at times with Ruth Ellis)".

If anyone has anything they don't mind sharing with them, then please PM me.

Cheers
Phil

If you use the Search button on the top right of your screen you will find at least 20 threads including: David Blakely and A strange story.

It's a while since I read them but I think there are links to other websites with more information.

Once you've digested that lot I suggest you then come back with any more specific questions that people here may be able to answer

Edit: It may be worth a Google search for "Steering Wheel Club" as I think Ruth worked there or frequented it

Slightly ot, but as a researcher, and one that has done a lot of TV doco's, it never fails to amaze me that production companies keep doing the same stories over and over again, usually without actually telling us anything new. Fifteen odd years ago I worked on a documentry on Jack the Ripper. Since then I've been asked to contribute to at least another ten or twelve.

Unless like Crippen, there's the slightest chance she was innocent, what's new?

It's a pity Dr Crippin wasn't on the Titanic with Tutankhamun's treasure and the Arc of the Covenant, hit an iceberg in the Bermuda Triangle, narrowly missing The Marie Celeste, then they could cover all these chestnuts in one hit.

I thought there might have been a suggestion that it was B.E.

got to be plausible enough for most documentaries these days :)

That's about the list of the "over and over again" doco's!!!

All joking aside, from what I have seen Crippen should be getting a posthumous pardon sometime soon

Anyway, back on thread, what does this new documentry have that "Dance with a Stranger" and the last two TV programmes didn't?

Phil, my apologies - I missed the point of what you are requesting and drove the thread off course.

What Phil needs to know is whether there is anybody still alive with personal reminiscences which the programme makers could use to supplement what they already have. Although speculating about the form the new documentary might take is interesting, in fairness to the documentary makers we should recognise that theyare trying to cover new ground. We will have to wait until the programme is shown to judge whether they have.

I would have also thought access to any of the cars of the period would also feature high on the list of requirements.

I have met people in Hampstead who knew them from this time. I would suggest a similar appeal in the pages of the Ham & High newspaper would be a good bet to reach people of the right vintage with the right knowledge.

When wandering past I've sometimes wondered about the authenticity of the bullet holes.
