Would be completely useless as a Hamilton replacement. Di Resta is a copy of Button. He's got nothing extra, doesn't do any exciting overtaking in a race. The last thing McLaren needs is two of those drivers. Pérez would be a far better choice if McLaren needs to replace Lewis.

Perhaps having two drivers of similar driving styles is a good thing, then the new car wouldn't have to be catering to two styles. Just a thought...

A good solid drive from PdR today, not that the haters will see that.

Good drive, shame he is such a bore though, worse than Webber probably in that respect :-/

Eh??? So who do you consider to be the prince of charisma in the paddock then? Genuinely intrigued.

Vettel, Alonso Vettel jokes about Kimi's "I think so-accent" (Alonso and Vettel at Hockenheim 2010), Massa (Good job lad!) He passed me! and Hamilton (Because I'm Black) are all absolutely hilarious guys at times if you ask me ;) Kovalainen, Kobayashi and Ricciardo are quite fun guys as well. There are some!

Oh for goodness sake, why is Paul di Resta a "bore"? Because he's quiet? Well so what if he's quiet, quiet people deserve success too. It really annoys me that some people expect F1 drivers to be "funny" crowd-pleasers. This is F1, not a cheap popularity contest.

Paul is a sweetie-pie and I think he has an excellent chance of being the next Scottish WDC.

Great drive today. Really great.

The problem with the Autosport.com's overhyping is that his "grade" is not going to reflect how great today's drive was because they always give him a 9 anyway.

How is Perez any less of a copy of Button and what does he have extra?

Pérez' driving style has more comparison to Hamilton's than Button's

True, but what if the car is rubbish with that driving style? That means you have two victims and you're going nowhere.

Really? I haven't noticed that. Perhaps you could explain in Perez topic/thread.

What a heartbreaking morning it must be for Di Resta. Joining Button's talent agency he must have thought that he would be first in line for Lew's seat but instead Mclaren seemed to have made their mind up long time ago so sign Perez. Could Sauber be an option for the Scott?

F1 is terribly fickle. I feel for him also, but (putting on my F1 boss hat) I would have probably gone with Perez too.

Di Resta is a good driver but pairing him with Button would have been a disaster for Mclaren. You should always spread your bets by having drivers of different personalities and driving styles. During the past weeks Di Resta has been clamoring in the press for a top team, saying every week that he's ready. He only hope, albeit a slim one is Ferrari. If he has financial backing then Sauber is a good option for him.

Not a real step forward. Looks as though he has no better option other than to stay with FI.

Replacing Mark Webber at the end of 2013 could be an option for him. If the wants that seat he will need to be more visible. He's great at scoring points and staying out of trouble, but that makes him an invisible average a bit like Rosberg. Therefore he might need to do fewer one-stoppers and work to beat his peers with the same strategy as them.

Interesting that Di Resta has proven to be consistently closer to his own peak performance whereas Sergio has hit a very high peak on very few occasions. Would appear team bosses take more notice of peak performance over consistency in young drivers. You can learn consistency, you can't learn speed. Would explain how Massa stayed in F1 after his first season (or that his management was son of Jean Todt, hmm).

Perez is 22yrs old whereas Di Resta is 26.. in this case I find it understandable to look at Perez peak performance, there is lots of time for polish until he gets to same age as Di Resta..

The doubts i have about Sergio are because his good results have mostly come when he tried a different strategy rather than out right speed. F1 is a fickle sport but i'd have taken Paul or Hulk over Sergio, its impossible to say whose quickest but i think they're both pretty quick and getting the most out of their car more than Sergio has. IMO his "peaks" are slightly distorted by strategy gambles.

As for Paul, if you look back over this thread its clear i'm a fan and , in my opinion, he's in the wrong place and the right time. Maybe the Merc or Mclaren drives could of been his but things haven't gone his way. I think he needs to get out of Fi sharpish, Vijay has big money problems and his career will lose momentum/get over taken by the next new kids on the block if he doesn't find a good drive somewhere else soon then oblivion/DTM/Le Mans awaits sadly.

I like Paul and I admire him, but I must admit that he has been losing out to Hülkenberg since the middle of the season. PdR is a fast driver - although Hülk is quick too -, but he'd need to show it. I hope he'll have bigger luck in the forthcoming rounds.

He has been poor in the last two races, Is it due to loosing Mcl seat to Perez affecting him mentally?

He was pretty impressive in the DTM. I know that there is a huge bias towards him in the media, especially from the British press. But it's not his fault.

He is a lil too conservative in terms of racing IMO, mostly uses only DRS Zones for overtakes and if it doesn't work he is stuck in traffic even with faster car

Hulkenberg has absolutely been the better of the two since Barcelona with the exception of Singapore. That's long before mid-season. Monza is the only unknown as his car broke in Q1.

Indeed he reminds me of Rosberg in that respect a big reason why neither will even be big favourites of mine. Hulkenburg is a real racing driver in the respect that he goes for gaps and will race, the same with Hamilton. Rosberg and Di Resta are not.

Agreed. Whilst Hulk was fighting for the lead he was spinning and assaulting the armco.

In fairness, Grosjean and Perez have managed to go from zero to hero and then back to zero :p

But yes, his reputation has suffered and today's race was a big blow considering the one thing he's supposed to have going for him is consistently finishing. It seems laughable now that he was being linked to top seats at the start of the year. Unlike Hulkenberg, he hasn't done anything to prove they were wrong to pass him over.

The Rosberg comparison isn't a bad one - neither are particularly exciting to watch. I reckon Nico is a bit quicker though.

He was doing a very good job until Singapore, nip and tuck between him and the Hulk but since then the wheels have fallen of and The Hulk as been brilliant. I would say a combination of Hulk getting back to grips with F1 and DIR struggling with the more conservative compounds and the end of the year have widened the gap.

He's still a good driver IMO but the Hulk is a class act, genuine WDC material IMO.

Considering he was on a full dry set-up and Hulk was on a wet, and he only lost it on the penultimate lap in the most hostile conditions, that's hardly surprising. In the early part of the race Di Resta had risen to 6th and was looking good for better until he was pitted. And later he got Webbered.

Indeed one of the problems evaluating Hulk and Di Resta this season is that FI has had them on different strategies quite often.

IMO Rosberg's stock has dropped the most, but I see where you're coming from. Sutil performed better than Paul last year, but that was acceptable as Sutil was in his 5th season in F1 and di Resta in his first. Now he's paired with Hulkenberg, who is a year younger and has also just finished his second season of F1 (with a year in between as a third driver) and he has been outdone again.

Massa improved considerably, Grosjean demonstrated excellent pace and Senna's stock was never that high anyway. di Resta went backwards.

I see what you mean but then it shows how much better Hulk is to have outqualified PDR on a wet set up.

Either way it seems he has another year to light some fires but if he doesn't I would think it's game over and back to DTM.

The heavy BBC bias really has caused more harm than good imo.

Di Resta changed set-up post-qualifying. Yes, Hilk out-qualified him but in qualifying it's sometimes down to who gets out of the pits when.

I'd rather have Di Resta in my team than, say, Massa, Webber, Vergne, Pic, DLR, Karthikeyan, Maldonado, Senna, Pic, Petrov...

Gary Anderson on Di Resta

Does Paul Di Resta have what it takes to win the world championship? ‏‪@Martin_Glass96‬
As a driver, Di Resta is as talented as necessary to win races. Whether he can win world championships or not, the biggest thing that lets him down is his attitude. In F1, if you're going to win the world title, you need everyone around you. Every member of the team needs to be pulling for you and really be on your side. And Paul doesn't know how to create that environment for himself. He has a lot to learn and he doesn't seem to be learning it.

Huh. It is a mystery. Maybe one day this is how he'll get to be WDC, inexplicably left to do his thing while all other drivers are defended against.

In the meantime, this Paul Di Resta thread does indeed have to close.
