Im new to this so here goes, I and two friends are intending to go to the GB Grand Prix this summer (99). Unfortunately I left it a little late in booking a grandstand seat and only one stand is left (uncovered). Seeing the location wasn't to hot I have decided to stand in the cheep seats and wondered if anyone out there has done this in previous years. I want to get the best possible view, I realise I have to get there very early, thats no problem. Can anyone offer any advice on good spots to aim for, what time to get there any clever tricks to get the best possible view. Also I have heard that cars leaving the official car park travel at a minute fraction of the cars going round the track, does anyone know of any other places to park within a couple of miles walking distance which would be easier to get away from. Cheers everyone, looking forward to the new season

I actually booked my tickets last night, there were a few grandstand seats left but not in any of the better locations, in the end I have decided to book general admission tickets as there are many more options open. I have been watching GPs since I was about 12 (18 years ago) but never had the opertunity to go. I know I have to get there early, and when I booked last night I found out that the gates to Silverstone open at 5am, well its the summer so what the hell, I'll be banging on the gates at 4.30!!I don't intend to stay over night near the circuit, I live about a 2 hour drive away so I might either drive down late the night before and grab a couple of hours sleep or drive down in the early hours, I can't wait, July is going to be a good month, British Grand Prix and the opening of the new Star Wars film in the UK. By the way I saw from your profile that you live in Cananda, where abouts? Are you just coming over for the GP? Thanks for the reply

We are from Brampton Ontario,(north of Toronto). Yes we are attending the British GP this summer and looking forward to the event. We were to late in booking accomdations the closest we can get is in Oxford. There is a another couple going with us so we plan on driving to Silerstone. Is it true there is only one road into the track area?.

Thanks for the reply Dav Tracy, in answer to your question, Oxford is not too far away from the circuit, it also has the added bonus of being a really nice place to stay in, lots to see and do there any.

As for the car facilities, they are not too bad once you are in Silverstone, but, there is only one small road from the circuit to the main road. Also there is only really two ways to go once you are on the road, left
or right. I haven't been but I have heard its a real pain to get into and out of the car park. A relative of mine went a few times and said that the best way to do it is to park and fly into the circuit, unfortunatley this costs about £60 per person, but you do get away quick and in style as well as having a good view. I am planning to go to some of the testing sessions this year, I will check things out and let you know what I find.

Brit Git, I go to Silverstone every year using general admission, so here are a few comments that might be useful

The queue for admission on Sunday starts at about 7:30pm on SATURDAY! No joke, at 4:30 am the queue will be about 2000 people long at each gate.
If you want the best standing location you have to queue all night, or most of the night. you only get one shot at gettnng a good position

Last year, we queued IN THE RAIN from 7:30pm on the Saturday! It was a good laugh, and we were first into the circuit at 5am

Best standing location: I reckon Woodcote, you can see the pit entry, priory, luffield, brooklands and woodcote as well as a big screen. and you get the atmosphere of the stadium section as well.

Best toilets: this is VERY important!!! You do not want to know what some of the toilets are like. avoid the portakabins, go to Woodcote again, there is a proper toilet block there

Take a brolly! when it is raining, it is an object that is designed by god himself, especially when you see people freezing in bikinis and shorts, having not brought one!
There is no overhead cover at all in the standing areas

MOST IMPORTANT:
==============

TAKE A DECK CHAIR or you will have nowhere to sit. Stock up with snacks as you can get trapped in the crowd for long periods of time, unable to leave/get back to your chair

sorry if you know any of this already, but these are the tips i wish someone had told me a few years ago! Hope it helps

Might see you at Woodcote, i'm the one with umberellas, ponchos, a small bar-b-q, telescope and large Damon flag :)

Thanks for the reply Buzzin Hornet, I will definately take your advice and get there really early, I know what you mean about toilet facilities, I have been to a few rock festivals and I think that when these large events are organised there is a clause in the contract which says if you hire porta-cabin stlye toilets you have to guarantee that the first 500 people that use them must have some sort of serious internal tummy bug. Spare a thought for the guys that have to take them away after though! Just my luck I'll get stuck behind "that" lorry for two hours on the way out! Maybe see you there, I'll be the one with the deck chair, umberella, tent, food supply for an arctic mission and portable mini bar!
Cheers!
