Hello, again, it's me once more looking to test the knowledge of my fellow TNFers as my MG Car Club pals try to nail down another location and year from the "Jack Twyford Archives".

It looks like preparations for the Monte Carlo Rally, but where and what year? A few clues appear - a brief flash of a "Sheffield and Hallamshire Motor Club" poster, the Wilson's pub in the background at one point, and the bus.

The date we believe to be late 40s or early 50s, before the year appeared on the rally plate. The Allard DRJ 600 belongs to Reg Holt.

Any help appreciated - many thanks in anticipation. Here is the clip

DRJ 600 was registered in 1949

KXP 840 was registered between Oct 49 & June 1950.

From that we can assume that the earliest this film could have been taken is January 1950

The start numbers don't match 1951, 52 or 53 so it's probably 1950.

From the Autocar preview of the 1950 Monte Carlo Rally

Start Glasgow 22 January
Schedule – first competitor leaves Glasgow 4.11 pm, arrive Doncaster control 11.52 pm, then arrive Folkstone 7.36 am.

114 Allard – Reg Holt/Mangoletsi
113 Ford - Geoff Holt/Asbury

And from their report of the final section of the rally:
“That the passage of this section, in spite of blocks, was possible was proved by the Holt brothers, who scrambled the Ford Pilot and the Allard past lorries, competitors, and all, using the bank and the ditches as well as the road. But later on came their Waterloo. The Allard, entered by Reg Holt, intent on keeping schedule, ran into the back of Geoff Holt’s stationary Ford – of which the tail lamp was obscured by snow. And whereas the Ford was able to continue without much trouble, the Allard suffered damage to the lamps which delayed it considerably, and another British car was out.”

Geoff Holt/Asbury finished 58th

Which fits nicely with the Sheffield & Hallamshire MC signs. It might be a long shot, and with reference to the illuminated sign, there is a Punch's Hotel in Doncaster, too.

Further details.

Love the obligatory "all stand around consulting the map spread out on the bonnet" shot.
"Planning? No we hadn't given any thought to where we are going until just now."

Anybody remember the GILES cartoon with the polar bear leaning on the bonnet of a rally car and the driver saying "Yes we might be in Regent's Park and then again you might learn to read a b.....y map"
