I’ve just been watching Alain de Cadenet’s series ‘Victory by Design’ and it got me wondering how Fangio might have gone in a rear-engined car. Considering that Coopers were winning in 1958, the year of his retirement, did Juan Manuel Fangio ever drive a rear-engined Cooper, Lotus, Ferrari, etc in a serious way (reporting, testing, evaluating, etc) and, if so, were his times competitive? Did he ever comment on how he may have performed on one?

The one mention I have seen of him driving a rear-engined car was when he went to England to take delivery of three or four little Brabhams...
He got into one to do a couple of laps, necktie flying in the breeze, and wouldn't come in when they flagged him to do so. His times, IIRC, were regarded as good. It would have been about 1964.

I too remember that.
