Around 7hp, which is around 20% I've done it, but don't tell anyone.

Not to mention tuning tail-pipe lengths! :)

Pic in the current Australian Classic Car magazine, article about Lakeside's 50th anniversary.

And nobody should notice the Sakzewski entry in this pic, should they?

Now there's an eclectic mix. Two Austin Lancers, a Jag, a VW, the inevitable FX Holden, and what looks like a Mopar product - Dodge maybe? Don't see that sort of mix in the ATCC these days.

I believe it's a '58 Plymouth...

A 1960 Dodge replaced it and raced there as well.

I am assuming this did not survive? I recall seeing the shell for sale back in the late 80's.

I bought the Ken Hastings car for $1000 including moulds etc. when CAMS banned it. I put a Mazda 10A Rotary hanging out the back for under 2000cc Sports sedan series here in Adelaide South Australia. The car had a Ford BDG and FT200 midships when Ken ran it.

I sold it to Brian Randle (RANDY'S RACE WHEELS) who lived around the corner. Brian developed it and had a lot of fun with it. The photo is of it when Brian sold it. He went on to build one of the 3 NORAX sports cars with Ian Davis and Lance Ridgeway.

The Karman Ghia finished up as a road car !!! Yes I saw it with my own eyes....but couldn't believe how it could possibly pass RWC's. The owner had just hung some VW plates on it.

The central cabin was VW/steel, but the front was space frame with big fuel tank, and wishbone suspension with HQ Holden uprights and brakes. Rear had uprights made from Datsun 180B hubs and Datsun half shafts. Front was one piece fibreglass body and so was rear. But note nicely flared guards and front spoiler.

I lent the moulds to Peter Schultz for his Porsche 911 powered Karman Ghia Off road racer with which he won Class 7 Australian championship many years ago.

Ken Hastings built a AW11 Toyota MR2 Sports Sedan with the BDG/FT200 mid engine setup from the Karman Ghia.
It was very successful and fast and it too was banned by CAMS. It is currently FOR SALE on "105".

And we are talking a LONG time ago. I raced against Brian in that car in the 80s.
And against Peter Shultz at rallycross in the late 70s when that his car was first built.

No these days they race the same car with different panels. A Falden and Holcan all with basically a Boss 302 engine.

I thin Ray would be happy with that Mopar!!

There was a VW based sports car in Tasmania circa 1960-61 built by Karl Jendrick from Hobart. I have a photo somewhere......

Also the well known Pooley Mk II sports car built and raced by John Pooley with 1200cc VW from about 1963-65. I have heard that this car became the basis of the John Goss Tornado Ford, but I am not sure about the truth of that.

The Robin Bessant VW 1200 beetle sedan appendix J was reputed in Tasmania to be 'Australia's fastest Volkswagen' in about 1963-64, but of course there were probably others laying claim to that title. This car was red in colour. I think there may have been an earlier Bessant VW (silver in colour???) but I stand to be corrected on that.

Having looked very closely at the Goss Tornado, I would think not...

It did have a VW gearbox in it, which had some minor internal modification to make it more reliable, but the chassis was very much made for the job of containing a Falcon six, no suspension parts or anything else was VW.

Quite right Ray, the Tornado was a new bespoke chassis etc. Here's a few Tassy VW's incl the Bessant machine as mentioned by Rob. Very quick car, didn't hurt that Robin was a very capable steerer as well. And yes there are 2 other people in the car, picked up on the way back to the pits no doubt.
