I thought it might interest some of you to know that my dad, Eric Jackson, has - all being well - recently arrived in Cape Town on a nostalgic trip.
Those of you who remember his exploits will recall that he broke the London to Cape Town record in a Ford Cortina in 1963 and in 1967, raced the Windsor Castle mail ship from Cape Town to Southampton.
The London to Cape Town record breaking trip ended at the Mount Nelson Hotel which is where he will be staying tonight. In 1963, he and his co-driver, Ken Chambers, arrived in Cape Town within just a few minutes of the record ... and got lost. More by good luck than anything, they ended up at the Mount Nelson Hotel where the car ran into a ditch in the dark but they had broken the record by just a few minutes. I expect the old man will be looking to see if that ditch is still there!
He'll also be visiting dock E, where the Windsor Castle race began. He's never been a person to sit still and he'll be leaving Cape Town tomorrow evening. At 86, he still hasn't slowed down.
Is there anyone here in Cape Town? You see, he TELLS me its a nostalgic trip but, knowing the old bugger, I wouldn't be surprised if it's a recce
You'll remember that his record was beaten last year, after 47 years. Please don't tell me he's going to try again! If you're in the area, please find him and tie him down - I promise you, he's daft enough to have another go!

Great news, Jackie, thanks for telling us. Did you or your Dad manage to get in touch again with Ken Chambers?

Any chance of him getting out to the Winelands region of the Cape on Sunday?

Hi Tim,
My dad made contact with Ken's son and they had a good chat on the phone which he was very chuffed about. They have been mailing each other photographs - snail mail of course, my dad not exactly being too computer literate
Hi H,
He is getting onto a cruise ship on Sunday which leaves at 7pm, so he has most of the day. Where is the Winelands region? Close by?

Winelands regions...basically Stellenbosch (45km from Cape Town), Paarl (55km), Franschhoek (60km), but also the more remote towns like Ceres, Robertson, Montagu, etc.
