Some time ago I posted a photo of a Volvo at the Hampton closed stage from the Rally of the Hills 1971.

Posted Image

I arrived at the special stage just after dawn, & after the front of the field had gone through,
so my early shots are of mid field & tail end runners.

I thought they may be of interest, if only for the variety of cars
& the way they were set up.

The cars did a double lap of the closed circuit, coming from the road to the left of the shot &
returning for the second lap from in front of the spectators in the background.

I've picked up as many names as I can from the signs on the cars.

That was the middle/rear of the field for the first stage.

I'll load up the second stage, with the front of the field next.

The power of the internet is amazing -
Yesterday I received a call out of the blue from Mark Sheridan from whom I'd not heard for nearly 40 years - almost since the time this photo was taken.
He apparently decided to Google Rally of the Hills, found this TNF site and Lynton's photos, and decided to chase me up.
So, he Googled me, found a likely number, gave me a call and we intend to catch-up for a meal soon, since he now only lives less than a couple of hours away.
We only did 2 rallies together and won the class both times apparently.
Thanks Lynton :)

Thanks David,
You have no idea how good that makes me feel.

I started this post ages ago, after scanning the negs & seeing your name.

I posted this photo on the "Aus personal photos" way back on January 21st asking if you were (or were related to) the Seldon.....
I mean, really....a Seldon in a Volvo!!

I received a cryptic remark from you confirming the likelihood, but no other elaboration.

I started this thread & posted the first few shots to see if anybody else would bite & got nothing.

I presumed nobody cared....so I dropped it.

It went cold for weeks....& now this!!

I'll now post the rest, including some more of you guys, & see if there's any more interest.

Hehe - sorry about the cryptic reply back then, Lynton.
Thanks for the photos and I look forward to see what other gems you can dish up :)

And here's a link to a map of the Hills District Car Club's Hampton property...

http://www.hdcc.com.au/hamptonmap.asp

I've competed there a few times - it's tight and twisty, very hilly and challenging. Can be a bit of a car-killer for the incautious, but lots of fun too.

I'm going to link this thread to the Hills forum - there might be someone there who can fill in some gaps, and I'm sure some of them would love to see the pictures.

I'm going to nominate Lynton as a TNF Living Treasure, by the way!

Could the unidentified Escort be Bruce Hodgson?

There's no mention of the Fiat in the RCN report (December 1971 issue)...

I think Bruce had Debortoli sponsoship in 1971 but the placement of the Ford logo rings a bell.

The Rally then moved to Victoria Pass, if I remember it correctly, & ran two stages in the middle of the day,
the first starting just next to the pass & the second in Hartley Vale.

The RCN report would help jog my memory.

These are the first stage.

I tended to peel off once Brian Lidbury had gone through...he was the car I was providing service for.

That would be Berghofers Pass. It branched off at the bottom of Mt Victoria Pass and wound it's way up the hill. It was not as steep but had a lot more corners. It was popular with trucks in the postwar years.
The last time I went up it was in about 1970 in the back of mums Studebbaker Lark wagon. I had been up it a couple of times with dad in a truck before then.
