Is anyone on the forum familiar with this car?

http://www.prewarcar...ds/ad50963.html

Rough translation of the German indicates that it is a BMW 328 that was originally sold to Hungary in 1938 and converted there in the '50's to a barchetta/streamliner style racing special. Reminds me (somewhat) of the Veritas racers of the period.

A lot of these kind of cars were built post-war using 328 engines / parts. If you want more info BMW made a book about 12 years ago called `from roadster to legend` in which you can find most of them

Thanks. I received some additional information from the seller that it was raced in period by Karl Gunther Bechem. There are also some 1950's era photographs that show the car in the paddock of what appears to be a local level race. Bechem was recently reunited with the car and signed the dash ,but I am not familiar with him as a driver.

Have you seen this Wiki article, which features a photo of what appears to be the same car?

There are several experts on these BMW-based cars on the forum, notably 'uechtel' and Michael Müller. It might be worth contacting them via PM if they don't spot this thread soon.

I've just pointed uechtel towards this thread. I expect he'll be along shortly ...

Sorry for being a little bit late into this thread ;) but of course I watched it from the beginning. But to me the matter is a bit complicated and I did not find time so far for the elaborate answer that the subject in my opinion requires.

I have to admit, that what looked quite simple to me ten years ago, has evoked a quite complicated chain of questions, which are not easy to explain. This starts with the already eventful history of what may be the car´s historic identity. If you read the advertising carefully it mentions Bechem, but it does explicitely say it was not his car. That sounds a little bit different the "additional information" mentioned by bespoke, which I think I can also remember of previous versions of the car´s description (has the link in the ad changed during the last days?), like is also stated in the wikipedia article linked by Tim. I think the trader may have been good reasons to give this statements as funnily in another wikipedia article http://de.wikipedia....AFM_(Rennwagen) there is a photo of a second such car (obviously the author(s) of that article did not notice the contradiction  ). But the story of Bechem´s car is, that he had bought the remains of a crashed AFM Formula 2 single seater and had it converted into a Barchetta-like sports car. Later he had two such bodies - but still one chassis...

Thank you for your candor. I believe I will move on.
