Now that Tamiya has corrected the glaring omission of the Lotus 79 from their kit lineup I got to thinking about other race cars that ought to be available as 1/24th scale or larger kits.

The first F1 car that comes to mind is Dan Gurney's Spa winning Eagle T1. The second is Rindt's Lotus 72 (I know, I know, you could convert a Fittipaldi Lotus 72 but it's a lot of work)

From the Can Am era the Porsche 917-30 instantly springs to mind. The Shadow Mk1 would also be very cool.

While resin kits might be available for the above, they're just not the same as plastic (especially considering that almost all resin kits are curbsides)

What cars would you vote for kitting?

I'd personally like to see the Kellison J-4. But I am aware that it perhaps neither qualifies as a bonafide race car nor deserving. :drunk: (Mean looking thing)

I'd like to see a series dedicated to the Formula Junior cars though.

You raise an oft-asked question, biercemountain, and one that often populates modelling forums as a "fantasy wish list" topic.

Personally I would like to see, as a plastic assembly kit:
1/20th F1:
Ferrari 312 T4
Lotus 49
Eagle Weslake
Williams FW08
Brabham BT49

1/24th other:
Ford RS200
In fact ANY Group B or other non-kitted rally car

1/12th bike:
Kawazaki ZX-6R F3 (only 'cos I've got a real one...)

After some additional thought I also nominate the following:

Ferrari 312PB
Ferrari 333SP
Lola T332
Hawk Ford (Indy 500 winner '69)

At 1:43 I would like to see diecasts of the following, some have as far as I know never been modelled while others have come and gone and I've missed them:

1966 Brabham BT19 - Jack Brabham - surprisingly this has never been modelled
1973 Tyrrell 005/006 - Jackie Stewart
1974 McLaren M23 - Emerson Fittipaldi - I've never seen this either
1978 Lotus 79 - Andretti - I have a 78 for that year but would like a 79
1981 Williams FW07C
1983 Ferrari 126 C2B/ C3
1991 McLaren MP4/6 - Senna - I know it has been modelled but anything Senna is sold out

That would complete my collection of World Championship Winners (Drivers' and Constructors')

For my "historically significant set there are a few I'd like to see, including:

1914 Mercedes
1926-27 Delage
1911 Marmon Wasp - I know Hobby Horse made it but everywhere is sold out
1920's Miller '91'
1965 Lotus 38

I say diecasts because my budget doesn't run to £100 or so for a built up kit and with my 10 thumbs I find I'm very disappointed with the kits I build

It's got to be the mentalist cars.

E.g. Hurst Floor Shift Special, Fageol Twin Coach Special, Eifelland March, Voisin GP and so on.

Or, even better, how about those that never even made it that far? Dywa, Lion, Alfa 512...

Any new model of any Can-Am car in 1/18th scale would be much appreciated.

In 1/43:
Opel Omega DTM
Opel Kadett 4x4 (both were done by Starter as kits years ago and unavailable by now)
The Opel Grand Prix cars from before WW1.
Shadow DN6C and DN10 single-seater Can-Am, actually any single-seater Can-Am car.

Is there any model of the Cosworth 4x4 F-1 car?
How about the Howmet turbine car?

I don't remember any model of the Cosworth although I seem to remember someone was considering it, maybe John Shinton?

Spark or Bizarre have done the Howmet but in their usual fashion blink and you miss it.

I also have one from Graphyland Ref. k24 built by me, it took me longtime to build it because I actually open the intake passage to the turbine (not an easy task)

Classic Carlectables are starting a new theme, the "Open Wheeler Collection". The first model in 1:18 scale is due out at the end of 2011. Its the Alan Jones Theodore Racing Lola T332 HU61 from the 1977 Australian GP meet held at Oran Park. Jones was 4th after a jump start. Australian RRP for this is $240.00 with a production run expected to be 2500.

Pics can be found here.. http://www.classicca...au/aboutus.html on the main page.

As far as I know it was only made by Provence Moulage in 2 versions, one I think with engine detail. As a kit only,1987 Indy test car it was called. Someone else will now find another maker no doubt!

It's finally here! Someone finally kitted the "Gold Leaf" Lotus 72 in 1/20th. The kit got a really good review in Tamiya Model Magazine and it doesn't even cost an arm and a leg.

The majority of subjects mentioned earlier in this thread are or have been available, though they are generally from the artisan kit makers rather than the mainstream. There simply isn't the demand for the quantites needed fot the plastic kit makers ior major diecasters to take them on. It's not enough for the serious petrolheads to want them, they have to have a much broader appeal to be viable.

To pick a few of the more unusual subjects that are available...

Cosworth 4WD recently released as a superb 1:43 kit by This Way Up

Hurst Floor Shifter Special has been around for years. SMTS made it as kit and hand built after it appeared at Goodwood a decade or so ago.

Eifelland has been made in a couple of forms, though these are pretty ropey kits best suited to the very skilled builder.

There are high detail kits of things like the 917/30 and the Eagle. They're very high quality kits but they are pricey.

1966 Brabham BT19 - Jack Brabham - surprisingly this has never been modelled

Even better news than Bruce Moxon's fairly pricey example is the Spark model of the BT20 (they do a Jack Brabham version, too) - good value at £49.99 http://www.ebay.co.u...=item58903f4465

On a related note, I see that Tamiya is going to be reissuing the 1/12 Lotus 72D. Like most of their recent reissues in this scale, I'd imagine it will come with some photo etch, but sadly will no doubt be lacking tobacco markings. At least the aftermarket decals will be the correct "biscuit" color and not the incorrect yellow color of earlier productions.

Hopefully Ebbro will sell a lot of '72s and be convinced that it is worth producing several variants. The Rob Walker car is in the pipeline, but surely the JPS car must follow? I have a Gold Leaf car on order together with fag sponsorship decals, I'll report here when it arrives.

Tamiya's 1/12th '72 will have photo-etched parts, they're also re-releasing the Ferrari 312B with similar accessories.

Do you know if Tamiya sells these photo-etch sets on their own? I have quite a few of the older releases and there's no way I'm shelling out $100 plus just to get the photo etch.

They don't seem to sell the p/e seperately. But you could either keep an eye on eBay (I got the RE20 set there) or find the Tamiya part number for the photoetch and contact HobbyLink Japan, or similar retailer, who may be able to order them for you.

The picture below was sent to me about a month ago, described as a Delage La Torpille 10.5ltr V12 1/43 by Brumm. I know it's not by Brumm,
as far as I know the Delage has not been released by anyone, so is it
A) a release by another company that I have missed
B) a scratch build
C) a conversion, if so any ideas on what model was used

If it's a Brumm conversion, the only candidate is the Blitzen Benz as no other Brumm model has a high-sided body. The 'Indianapolis' version (R81) has similar wheels . But on balance, I think it comes from someone else.
The acid test would be to look at the baseplate and see who that says made it - but obviously you can't do that if you just have a picture.

Thanks for that. I'll keep a look out for them.

I'm sure that although the market for the 20's and 30's period is smaller than that for modern Ferrari, Porsche and F1 there is enough interest for one or two makers to try it.

The 917-30 has been done extremely nicely in 1/18 by both Minichamps and Exoto. Unfortunately the Exoto car is not of Mark's car as it was in 1973-74, but the ex-Matt Drendel's restored/fabricated 917/30-004. There is a superb resin kit of both the Sunoco and Cam2 917/30 now in 1/24 scale by Model Factory Hiro, but they fetch close to $400 for the kits.

I'd love to see more CanAm cars in larger scales like the TI-22, Lola T70 Mk1-Mk3B, Lola T240 L&M, Ferrari 612, McLaren M6A, M20, Chaparrals of any kind (especially the 2J), and the L&M 917/10. Minichamps did release L&M car in a 1/18 diecast to Porsche dealers, but is really pricey to find now. A couple of now obscure resin kits in 1/24 of the L&M 917/10 have been done, but it definitely deserves something like the "Tamiya" treatment.

Still want a decent BT48...

There's been one available since 2006. Unfortunately with many of these subjects, there just isn't enough interest for them to be attractive to the mainstream manufacturers and so you either have to get your hands dirty and/or dig deep into your pockets. The BT48 was a beautiful car, it was also crap and is only of interest to us racing anoraks. Unless it won a world Championship or has a farting donkey on the nose, it is very rare that the public at large will be interested enough for it be worth doing.

That said, Spark are making more marginal subjects now as their production methods mean that they can make as few as 300 examples and they have tapped into the diecast collectors market quite well now, so you may see things like the Brabham from them in future. Unfortunately for those wanting 1970s special saloons, even on those low production numbers they're probably not viable, the only one that would likely get close would be Baby Bertha. If you disagree and are prepared to guarantee purchase of 300 pieces and can pay half the production cost up front with the balance on delivery, we'll happily broker the deal for you. You'll either make a few grand or lose it.

We have a kit manufacturer working on Viva/Magnum/Firenza rally cars and I suggetsed some of the saloon racers to him while helping with research. Sadly he's not interested in circuit racing, but when his kits eventually appear they could be a useful base to those who do get their hands dirty.

Sorry if this appears a bit negative, but having spent the last 16 years working for a company that's been doing this stuff for 40 years, I have a rough idea of what's going on.

The Volvo Amazon and PV544, in plain white for you to paint. Danish drivers Niels-Peter Ellemann-Jacobsen and Mette Kruuse, in one model apiece, would be the first two cars for me to buy. Plenty of these cars were around in Scandinavia in its time.

Minichamps have made the Amazon in a variety of colours and the PV has been made as diecasts by Ixo in 1:43, Revell in 1:18 and as a 1:43 kit by Tin Wizard. The latter is readily available, the others can be found if you look.

Thank you for the reply. I think I've even seen some of the models you mention. What I forgot to mention was that I wanted the Amazon and PV544 in 1/32 scale slot cars

1980s group A touring cars in 1/32 like the Volvo 240 Turbo, Holden Commodore, Jaguar XJS, Rover Vitesse, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, you name it. The Ford Sierra RS500 Cosworth and BMW M3 already excists, but the old Scalextric version of the Ford could need a proper update. Fly currently does the BMW M3 but it looks clumsy.

Whether these cars deserve to be modelled is a moot point but I see that Racing Models have suddenly had a large number of new cars on their list.

These include Apollon, Trojan, Token, Theodore, Ram, Lyncar, Iso Marlboro and dare I even mention it, the Fry!!!!!

Most a snip at £75 to £80, though a few are as cheap as £50 -£65.

Yes, Glyn, there is one on the Racing Models website too - £80.

BUT, where shall I begin? The nose is all wrong; the chassis is all wrong; the airbox is wrong; but, the decals are excellent..... ):

I like the light blue Costin Nathan on the Spark 'coming soon' section.

Can't find any other reference anywhere else. Does anybody here know something about it?
That model is an absolute must have for me.

I thought I had posted this question before but now cannot find it, so apologies if I repeat myself, but...

Why NO popular production versions of pre-1957 Maserati 250Fs in 1:43rd scale? And even the 1957 versions are essentially re-hashes of dubious accuracy based on Fangio's Nurburgring car.

Given that it was from 1954 probably the most common, and certainly for private entrants the most popular, Grand Prix racing car in the world until its eclipse and discontinuation it seems extraordinary that only that '57 Lightweight has been modelled, other than in kit form. Especilly given the glittering array of drivers it attracted: Ascari, Fangio, Moss, Behra, Salvadori, Bira, Schell, Musso, Simon, Villoressi - even that Big Blonde from Farnham (albeit in Moss's car), not to mention so many privateers, from Gould to Wharton. Even Jack Brabham had a go in one.

As the blurb in David McKinney's eponymous book says: 'driven by some of the great names of the era... it won all over the world, not only the classic F1 races... but also the non-championship events that padded-out the calendar n those days.' Many have called it the quintessential front-engined racing car - yet you can't get a 1:43rd scale model of one for love nor (sensible) money.

So - why no popular production models? Or, to put it another way, when?

Not 43rd but Crescent made a lovely 250.F back in the late 1950s.
