We had used to repair to Charlie Naylor's garage at closing time and continue putting the world to rights sitting in, on and around Mephistopheles. Oh to put the clock back.Alfa Bimotore (either one), Mercedes Benz W165, Fiat 806, Mephistopheles, Chitty-Bang-Bang (any one!), The Beast of Turin ...

I've also seen another photo of the pairing somewhere and I'm certain it was the Gold Cup as referred to on this Mike Hayward shot http://www.mikehaywa...stewart-brm.htmI never saw the V16 BRM race but I did see JYS do a couple of demonstration laps in it at Oulton Park in 1967. The car was so difficult to get started that a friend of mine was roped in (pun intended) to give it a tow with his Austin Champ. It did the trick but I'm not convinced that Jackie was running on all 16 even then. In my memory this happened at the Gold Cup meeting but checking the entry I see that it was mostly F2 cars and that BRM were not present. I therefore think it must have been the Spring Cup,

As you now know, you missed the great concert - I know because I was there. I was a student at Leeds Unversity from 1968 to 1971 and thanks to some energetic and well-connected Ents Secretaries, you could see top line bands and artists in the refectory just about every Saturday night. If its any consolation, I couldn't be bothered to get up at 1 AM to queue for tickets for Pink Floyd, who were there two weeks later. If I had made an effort I would have gone to the Targa Florio in early 70s. But because I was a lazy sod the closest I got was Brands Hatch...How I would love to have seen and heard some 312Ps and Tipo 33s blasting round the island.
I have form for missed opportunity- I was the 18 year old who ,when asked if I wanted to see The Who by his mate ,found some pathetic excuse not to go. They were Live at Leeds. Yes - THAT one...

I went to see Herman's Hermits when they came to Vancouver back in the day. The show started with a new group...The Who. I think everyone was blown away by the end of that set!

I did eventually get to see the Floyd a couple of years later at Newcastle City Hall, when they attempted to do Dark Side of the Moon in quadraphonic sound - a brave but unsuccesful effort. Talking of which, my "cars I wished I'd seen in period" choice is the Chaparral 2F at the Targa Florio in 1967. Has there ever been a car/circuit mismatch like that? How starnge. I was 'studying' at Leeds University from '69 to '72, also at the Who gig and also chickened out of queuing up for the Floyd tickets. Didn't seem much time to do any work, somehow ...

I wouldn't stand too close to Joe Cocker when you call him a Geordie - he is proudly Sheffield born & bred. If you're not careful he'll come and sort you out - with a little help from his friends of course!Ha! I was at Leeds Uni. from 1967-1970. A chum and I joined the “Entertainments Committee” which basically meant you helped the bands unload and set up their gear on stage…and you got in for free! So I’ll add Cream, Who, Keith Emerson and the Nice , some Jordie bloke, who used to play every other week, named Joe Cocker --as well as actually playing impromptu football in the main cafeteria/stage area with Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart and their roadies (long drive up from London in a heavily laden Ford Transit!) and escorting Julie Driscoll to the stage (sigh)…and much more.
Oh, cars—not bothering to go Le Mans in 1966 & 67 and missing Ford Mk II and IV’s (saw everything else, though, at the wonderful ’67 BOAC race)..and I suppose not seeing 250F Maseratis and Vanwalls, Pete Collins and Mike Hawthorn etc., because my Dad thought I was too young to go with him to Silverstone in 1957 and 1958!
