Any aero-engined land speed car, and when I say aero engine, I mean a piston engine. Can you imagine standing in the middle of the measured mile and seeing and hearing 37 litres (or 74 litres if it were Thunderbolt) gonig past at 300 mph+ at full throttle.

On the other side of the coin, any mid 80s turbo F1 car, just didn't sound right to me.

Never mind the cars i wish i had seen, its the ones I did see but cant remember now that bother me.

Its all the more galling to know I was at Brands for a very wet 1000k, but can I remember Pedro in the 917, do I recall any of the GPs I was at between 65 and late 70's? the heck i do.

Knowing I saw Stewart, Hill, Amon etc but was too young at the time to really know what was going on is pretty galling!

We had used to repair to Charlie Naylor's garage at closing time and continue putting the world to rights sitting in, on and around Mephistopheles. Oh to put the clock back.

Your first picture hits the nail on the head for me...

Though there are plenty of others, particularly the German cars of the thirties.

Well, there you go - I was on the team building the 1964 version of picture 2, and when about 11 or 12 went and sat in the Mercedes in the Montague Motor Museum until turfed out by an attendant - well there was no sign saying I shouldn't. It was the first Merit Kit I bought; loved the tartan seat cloth.

Never mind the looking at, in my dreams I get to drive a 250F...

Nuvolari driving an Auto Union.

I never saw the V16 BRM race but I did see JYS do a couple of demonstration laps in it at Oulton Park in 1967. The car was so difficult to get started that a friend of mine was roped in (pun intended) to give it a tow with his Austin Champ. It did the trick but I'm not convinced that Jackie was running on all 16 even then. In my memory this happened at the Gold Cup meeting but checking the entry I see that it was mostly F2 cars and that BRM were not present. I therefore think it must have been the Spring Cup, which had a better field of F1 cars, including the H16 BRM. Not surprising as the race had been organised as a benefit for the International Grand Prix Medical Service, of which BRM boss Louis Stanley was Director General.

I was also glad to have seen F2 from 1970 to its end, It went from small fast cars , to larger , wider and very powerful cars , my favorite being the shovel nosed March.

Just about every historical race car in history would have been operated that n'th more in period. Seeing Tom Kristensen almost gracing a concrete wall with a Mk. I Ford Escort RS1600 BDA, does do some justice though.

I've also seen another photo of the pairing somewhere and I'm certain it was the Gold Cup as referred to on this Mike Hayward shot http://www.mikehaywa...stewart-brm.htm

I do yearn for some of the historical experiences y'all have put forth: the pre-war GP Mercedeses at full anger, for instance.

The real regrets are for the events I could have viewed (since I was alive and more-or-less sentient at the time) if I'd been both smart and rich: Fangio 'Ring drive; Gurney Eagle F1 win; Shelby Le Mans - Aston win; a genuine Carrera Panamericana; any RedEx 'Round Oz; Moss in the partially-assembled Lotus at Monaco; any decent Indy 500 Pre-George; Craig Breedlove's "Spirit of America" shortly before he said he would follow that act by setting himself on fire; and on and on and on and ...

If I had made an effort I would have gone to the Targa Florio in early 70s. But because I was a lazy sod the closest I got was Brands Hatch...How I would love to have seen and heard some 312Ps and Tipo 33s blasting round the island.

I have form for missed opportunity- I was the 18 year old who ,when asked if I wanted to see The Who by his mate ,found some pathetic excuse not to go. They were Live at Leeds. Yes - THAT one...

As you now know, you missed the great concert - I know because I was there. I was a student at Leeds Unversity from 1968 to 1971 and thanks to some energetic and well-connected Ents Secretaries, you could see top line bands and artists in the refectory just about every Saturday night. If its any consolation, I couldn't be bothered to get up at 1 AM to queue for tickets for Pink Floyd, who were there two weeks later.

I went to see Herman's Hermits when they came to Vancouver back in the day. The show started with a new group...The Who. I think everyone was blown away by the end of that set!

As for cars I wish I had seen in period, I saw a few Ferrari Testa Rossas race, but just missed the 4.9 Ferraris (the 410). I think that would have been cool.

How starnge. I was 'studying' at Leeds University from '69 to '72, also at the Who gig and also chickened out of queuing up for the Floyd tickets. Didn't seem much time to do any work, somehow ...

Squeaking of Mancunian Popular Beat Combos- Freddy Garrity was my milkman!

I saw PF at the Manchester College of Commerce, along with about 150 other week-end hippies. :smoking:

Cars? GTOs, 250LMs, etc. in factory period, before they were sold off owner-drivers, gained wing mirrors and were driven with one eye on the rev-counter and the other on the cheque book.

I did eventually get to see the Floyd a couple of years later at Newcastle City Hall, when they attempted to do Dark Side of the Moon in quadraphonic sound - a brave but unsuccesful effort. Talking of which, my "cars I wished I'd seen in period" choice is the Chaparral 2F at the Targa Florio in 1967. Has there ever been a car/circuit mismatch like that?

I would love to have seen racing at Brooklands, particularly the Outer Circuit. To have seen Cobb in the Napier-Railton in 1935 setting the lap record must have been, to use an overworked word, awesome.

Another Leeds alumnus here- 71-74. Saw Floyd in early 72 at Town Hall and was mesmerised. But would have been even more so had I indeed seen 2F on the Targa.

I would also like to have seen this in period. Came close to the experience at this year's Retromobile. Well done to Alain Cerf and his team in Florida for making this possible. I went to see the original Fardier de Cugnot the day before and the reproduction vehicle truly brings to life the work of this often overlooked engineering pioneer.

Ha! I was at Leeds Uni. from 1967-1970. A chum and I joined the “Entertainments Committee” which basically meant you helped the bands unload and set up their gear on stage…and you got in for free! So I’ll add Cream, Who, Keith Emerson and the Nice , some Jordie bloke, who used to play every other week, named Joe Cocker --as well as actually playing impromptu football in the main cafeteria/stage area with Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart and their roadies (long drive up from London in a heavily laden Ford Transit!) and escorting Julie Driscoll to the stage (sigh)…and much more.
Oh, cars—not bothering to go Le Mans in 1966 & 67 and missing Ford Mk II and IV’s (saw everything else, though, at the wonderful ’67 BOAC race)..and I suppose not seeing 250F Maseratis and Vanwalls, Pete Collins and Mike Hawthorn etc., because my Dad thought I was too young to go with him to Silverstone in 1957 and 1958!

I wouldn't stand too close to Joe Cocker when you call him a Geordie - he is proudly Sheffield born & bred. If you're not careful he'll come and sort you out - with a little help from his friends of course!
