Montoya? Huh

As for me, he is more like Raikkonen - not very good in qualification but very good in race, perfect tyres managment skills and ability to drive a heavy car.

if he were new Raikkonen, it should be interesting to see which Jenson or Checo manage his tyres better.
Jenson is also and additionally good overtaking skill!

Yup, one decent qualifying performance after some disappointing races and he's yet again a 'star'.

He did a good job, but come on guys.

Every driver has some disappointing races. If you start behind, you always have more chance to be in trouble than the guys who start in front. What he did today was good and deserves praise surely

Unfortunately some people, particularly the motorsports press, don't give Kobayashi the same credit when he does the same thing.

Anyone notice how many things have gone wrong for him since that announcement...McLaren are cursed and its so strong it works even before you officially start driving for them!

Truth be told, Suzuka and today have more to do with hotheadness on his part. They will have to slap his head in place in preparation for 2013.

McLaren have got to be thinking... "What the f#%k have we done???"

He is not fast over a single lap and can't race with cars when on the same strategy and with similar pace.

Checo has gone downwards faster than anyone. Now he is not even very fast - just moronically Massaesqué in his racing. Martin Whitmarsh must be shocked :)

His mistaking during battle were not only Suzuka and Today but also a last lap of Australia.
And in China he was overtaken easily by Alonso and Kobayashi.

He was very poor at battles!

Yeah this race was no tyre restricted and he was pretty poor.

Infact if anyone looks closely at him, he's only stood out by being on a contrarian strategy because he frequently gets outqualified by his teamate thus proceeds to 'throw the dice'.

To be fair to Massa. The team let him down pretty bad today. He was super around Korea and showed some real pace in qualifying but for an oversteer moment in Q3. He would have qualified ahead of Alonso.

Sky mentioned yesterday that some of the new parts were only on Alonso's car, because the team didn't have enough components to put on both vehicles. I couldn't find any info about it anywhere else. Any insights there?

I disagree, it has been proven this season, and especially in the last 4 races that Perez can do a great race just when tyres are the most important factor, and that is not guaranteed, he must be starting from the middle of the pack on a fresh tyres. He has one trick, and has built his entire reputation based on just 5-6 races. I really don't have anything against him, I just think he is not nearly as good as some people think he is, and that McLaren made a mistake by signing him.

Perez does not have very consistent car, its performance varies circuit to circuit. He was unlucky today, he has good potential, he needs more experience and McLaren's special driver development programme :D

I laughed when everyone was getting on his band wagon earlier in the season claiming he was so good and would be better than Felipe Massa. It was funny because everyone seemed to be focusing on a few high lights and ignoring the bigger picture which was that he makes a lot of mistakes, and was getting consistently out qualified by a pay driver who probably will be out of F1 by the end of the year. The pundits also got on this bandwagon, so another great example of why they are clueless.

Maybe they can break him down and reconstruct him like they did Heikki? ;)

Seriously though, he does have potential, I agree with you. I just dont think he's the type of driver that Mclaren should be looking for to replace a guy like Lewis. I'll be surprised if he's even on the level of Button when all is said and done.

Funny, how Perez gets bashed after a weekend, where he had good speed without a strategy advantage and a clear advantage over Kobayashi, who many people badly want to remain in F1. Perez qualified 8th, while Kobayashi was 17th I believe. Even if he got slightly unlucky with the puncture, you chose a wrong weekend to claim that he is slow and can't race on a normal strategy.

Pressure is already bilding up. Now more people will keep eye on him and point out his errors.

As for his driving yesterday, no he didn't have good speed, but it's more down to the car. You can't compare Sauber to top 4 teams unless you want to get disapointed. Occasionally Sauber have good races but those are more like exceptions, they have zero consistency.

Also Perez was first to pit for new tyres. Shows that "master of preserving the tyres" title was wrongly given to Perez where it was again down to the car.

His car was under-fueled, and he had to conserve fuel for more than half the race (and parked the car immediately after the finish line as well). Also, only Alonso had the new diffuser.

Funny, it was because Kobayashi's telemetry system was down at Q2.
Kobayashi got P3 twice in qualify, but did Perez?
And Kobayashi got 3rd in Suzuka "with normal strategy".

How many mistake did Perez make in the dog fight?
He give 6th to Koabayashi and 7th to Kimi in Australia last rap.
He lost his big chance to win by his unnecessary overrun in the dog fight against Alonso.
He were overtaken easily Kobayashi and Alonso in China.
Not only Suzuka and Buddha! Don't you remember them?

I understand Perez is quick and P8 in qualify was great but he have to be more coolness.

Sure he has made some mistakes. And didn't he have puncture from Maldonado debris in Australia? I don't remember so exactly.

I just don't see the point in overanalyzing every single mistake. He is still young and in learning process. Alonso made mistakes in 2004, Vettel in 2010, Hamilton on some occasions as well. If wanted, you can malign any driver for a few mistakes and "prove" that he is not good.

As for losing a race win to Alonso with a mistake, I remember for instance Raikkonen losing his first ever race win with a late-race mistake in France, also in his second full-season in Formula One.

As I said, you can find faults in anyone, even more so in young immature inexperienced drivers...

It's hard to say how Perez will do at Mclaren just looking at his Sauber results, the car obviously only works in certain conditions which makes the drivers look like the best new thing in certain weekends and awfull in the next. One thing is for sure, Perez needs to up is game in Q sessions, and while he did good this weekend he cant compare this result against Kobayashi because the team said the faulty telemetry on Koba 2nd Q2 run meant he couldnt brake properly and that wasted the Q effort. We will have to wait until next season to know what checo is really capable of, also let's not forget he's still very young.

that's extremely funny considering the reason why that "pay driver" is about to get out of F1.

To be fair, he ran wide on the oil from the failed engine of McNish's Toyota, which he didn't know. So it wasn't really a mistake.

It was Nico Rosberg trying a wild pass on yellow flags. Lost position to Raikkonen and Kobayashi because of that.

Good first stint in the USGP until the brake problems, the horrible pit stop (as usual) and the hard tyres (impossible to heat up in a C31, just ask Kobayashi who spent the whole race in 15th-17th places). Such a shame Sauber was so unbelievably crap in the Unofficial Mexico Grand Prix :(

In RC, the driver threads started with the Lewis Hamilton thread which was a discussion about a new up-and-coming driver who ought to make it into F1. Over a period of years the title of the thread was taken as a banner to discuss any and all aspects in which Lewis was involved, including lots of non-motorsport discussion, and it then spread to all other drivers who now have their own topic.

Threads like these have been looked upon by some as a 'fan appreciation' thread where dissenting opinions should not be given voice and by others as places to go to troll. It is this environment where the labels 'fanboy' and 'hater' or 'anti' have become ingrained and then employed more widely across the forum. During a race, progress is followed here instead of in the race thread or live forum; when a site releases a poll each driver thread is used to discuss that drivers position within it; when there is an incident, the thread for each driver involved becomes part of the extended battleground. In reality, the threads have become micro-communities where fans of particular drivers tend to discuss every aspect of F1 with other posters they feel comfortable with. Potentially good topics of discussion often go unnoticed by the more general membership who may have had something positive to contribute, because it was not clear the discussion was taking place.

We have decided that the threads are a barrier to the free flow of discussion and ideas and have taken the decision to ban driver threads as part of the introduction to our new rules, which can be found here (link).

As always, we are happy to listen to your views and opinions on how the forum is moderated but please, by PM only.
