Yesterday evening a nice documentary on Gilles Villeneuve was shown on TV. The deep friendship between Gilles and Didier, Pironi's wedding where the Villeneuve's were not invited, the unsporty behaviour of Pironi at Imola, the death of Gilles two weeks later at Zolder...

It's the "unsporty behaviour" of Pironi when he passed Villeneuve just before the finishing line, neglecting the pit signals, that's the most confusing subject. What happened, why did he do that, why did he ignore the pit signals... I'm not very familiar with "modern" F1, but I'd like to know what the readers on this forum think about it.

Of course we will never know the answer, both drivers are racing in heaven now, but is "ignoring pit signals" a common thing in F1?

This is one of the most discussed topics on this forum, and you'll find plenty of threads covering it if you enter 'Villeneuve Pironi Imola' into the Search facility. Here are a couple of the more relevant ones:

Gilles versus Didier at Imola, 1982

Didier Pironi – hero or villain?

It's due for release here in June and has been mentioned multiple times on Top Gear. I certainly intend to go and see it, since Senna, to me, was THE driver I looked up to in my childhood and early teenage years.

Here's the trailer:

To get back on topic. I did also see (the last part of) this documentary. Its one of many in a series called Belga Sport and produced by Canvas (former flemish broadcaster BRT). They center on historic belgian sport events and people.
The documentary is quite extensive: interview with Gilles at the time, many pictures of that day (also some confronting, beware!), interviews of today with Tambay, Arnoux, Mass, Bruynseraede, Jacques and Joan.

Trailer here:

I believe you can see it in full here:

And to get back to your answer: No.

It certainly isn't if you're unfortunate enough to be sitting in the number two Ferrari.
