Our dear friend and famous motor racing photographer Yves Debraine has died in his home in Lausanne Switzerland at the age of 85. Yves was an early exponent of color racing photography – then a true rarity. Many of his images appeared in the pages of l'Année Automobile (Automobile Year) in the 1950s and 1960s. Yves also was a professional art photographer, working in museums throughout Europe. He was a lovely gentleman and a true artist himself as his images show.

Very sad news indeed. As someone who is a huge admirer of his photographs and is thankful that the Klementaski Collection was able to make them available for purchase his is the passing of a truly great photographer. RIP Yves.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I just had a look at the Debraine photos in your Gallery. What a tremendous collection of photos of my favorite era in racing. Wonderful portraits, too. Some of my earliest memories are of his shots of the 1958 season in the 1959 Automobile Year.

Yes indeed, some of the very best images from past eras were taken by Yves Debraine, very sad news and my condolences to his family and friends.

Thats very sad news! I visited him in his home about 8 years ago. He was a very warm and friendly person and it was fantastic to have a closer look into his archive of racing photography. After Bernard Cahier now my other snapper-heroes is gone.

This is so sad. Yves Debraine was such a Great photographer and photojournalist. Without a doubt his name should stand alongside the names of Félix Nadar, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Erich Salomon, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Edward Steichen and Yousuf Karsh. His style has united the best of action, reportage, landscape, lifestyle and portrait photography. Along with Ami Guichard he stood at the forefront of Automobile Year. He covered motorsport in the 1950s and 1960s intensively. Thanks to Yves Debraine we still can experience the emotions of those bygone days. His portraits of Jochen and Nina Rindt in black & white or Jean Behra in colour are really brilliant and monumental. Now neither many of his heros, nor the author himself are alive, but his works are immortal.

I really enjoy his work; particularly his portraits. He had a particularly good eye into drivers souls. Clearly one the best ever. RIP.

For a great selection of his work in both black and white and colour, beautifully reproduced, you can do worse than invest in the recently-published 'Real Racers', as praised in the Pete Fenelon book thread.
