2 new Porsche 917 have resently appeared on the Freisinger Motorsport website :

917-009 (Gulf /JW Automotive) - MIA since 1972 when supposedly sold to Vasek Polak. It was believed that it was scrapped in 1971. It has now been found in Argentina. The Porsche Museum carried this chassis number on there 'Salzburg Winner' for a number of years until they changed it to -001.

917/30-00X - New frame that Freisinger has brought from the estate of the Bauer Company (Porsche sub contracted the frame build to Bauer). Stange that a new chassis appears as only 6 were commisioned by Porsche and all the chassis histories are known.

Do any forum members have any views or history on these 2 chassis.

Another chassis that appeared from Bauer over the last few years was 917-037 that Carl Thompson built and also 917/10-008 (Ex Vasek Polak) that appeared with Freisinger in 2008.

Its interesting that none of these chassis appear in the Porsche 917 book released by the Porsche Archiv in 2009.

Regards.

One thing that has come to light about 'scrapped' 917's is that what actually happened is that some were actually disassembled and stored for parts not sure if 009 could have been one of those disassembled and stored chassis.

If 917-009 has been found in Argentina I'm sure the vendor will have pictures of the car before it was restored. All restorers I know take pictures throughout the process. And I'm sure the person who found it in Argentina will have taken pictures of it as he found it.

We shouldn't cast aspersions until the owner has had a chance to post the pictures.

Allen, Not casting aspersions, just seems very strange that the car disappeared for 39 years with no references to it. I'm sure Freisinger will post all. Would be great to understand what happened to it during that time.
No references have been made to the chassis in the Porsche 917 - Porsche Museum Archiv Book released in 2009.

I dont know if the chassis was disassembled. It was supposed to have been used as a doner for the repair of 917-023 in 1971.
