Why was the Monaco Grand Prix not held in 1949, 1951, 1953 & 1954?

No idea, but you can add 1952 to that list.

The 1949 event was cancelled due to the death of Prince Louis II.

Wikipedia has an entry for 1952: http://en.wikipedia....naco_Grand_Prix

The 1952 Monaco Grand Prix was a non-championship sports car race held on June 2, 1952 at Monaco.

For the second time in two races, the Grand Prix suffered a multi-car pileup. In addition, it was marred by Luigi Fagioli's wreck in practise, which ultimately proved fatal.

Well, there was a Monaco GP in 1952 - albeit a non-championship sportscar race. Won by Vittorio Marzotto in a Ferrari 225S. So a supplementary question - why a sportscar race in 1952?

David Hodges' Classic Motor Races book on the Monaco GP suggests that the main reasons for the race not being held in 1949, 1951, and 1953-54 (and also prewar in 1938-9), were financial difficulties.

In 1952 the 4.5 litre / 1.5 supercharged Formula One, which should still have applied in 1952-53, was not being supported by the manufacturers, and it was not at all clear early in 1952 that the 2-litre Formula Two would be supported either. Monaco took the safer option of organinsing their 2nd June race for sports cars. Ferrari won all 7 GP's that year, with opposition from Maserati only at the end of season.

Thanks wenoopy that seems to cover both my questions. Financial difficulties in Monaco eh? - how times have changed!

Only GB and Italy have held a round of the World Championship every year since it's inception, so plenty more gaps to fill in, after all why single out Monaco?

Now Mexico 2008 ...........................hmmm.
