Reading Stewart's biography - 'Winning is not enough' he mentions winning the Monaco GP in 1973 then when Fittipaldi pulls alongside him to congratulate him, Stewart accidently crashes into him. This is the first I have ever heard of it, are there any photographs of this incident - did Fittipaldi say anything afterwards and has this ever happened before or since?

I know Brambilla crashed after taking the chequered flag in Austria in 1975 but that didn't involve anyone else.

Anyone got any more information about Monaco 1973?

Were they not attempting to shake hands?

This is how Pete Lyons reported the incident in Autosport:

As Jackie slowed down on the cool-off lap, and began to remove his gloves, Emerson drove up alongside to extend his congratulations - and the two cars touched. The JPS spun through a full 360 degrees and broke two wheels! They came up together again at the last turn and paused for a moment side by side at the entrance to the pits, the two top men in Grand Prix racing today exchanging animated communications in sign language before splitting off to drive up the separate sides of the dividing island.

Thanks Tim,

I was interested by this for two reasons, one that it was Stewart - not the type of driver you would imagine this to happen to! and two - exactly how serious it was. I was wondering if bits had been knocked off the cars or they had been bent out of shape would there have been a possibility (seeing how political and shady F1 was!) that they could have failed the scrutineers for being underweight or wrong width etc.

Obviously this didn't happen - thankfully but I presume there could have been a chance of one or both being disqualified? did the rules cover an incident on the victory lap that could change the status of the car? I just find it a curious incident.

If I remember Jackie checked his mirrors saw a JPS Lotus thought it was Emerson, if fact it was Peterson, not knowing Emmo was already along side.
