Hello everybody,

I was thinking of the whole notion of third cars in F1 and recalled some incidents in the 1980's when extra cars that were entered after the start of an F1 season were ineligible for points (e.g. Berger & Gartner in Monza '84, Dalmas Adelaide '87) and I was just wondering when this rule came into effect?

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It wasn't just third cars; Palmer's Zakspeed in 1985 was ineligible for points that it never looked like scoring. Perhaps a 1981 FOCA thing?

Yes, 1981 was the key year. Only cars registered for the whole championship could score points.
