My father (Lyndsay Paech) used to own and race the Nedloh way back when I could sit on his knee and steer her around the old gravel pits at Calder (late 60s - early to mid 70s)

He told me that the original owner / builder he bought the Neddy from was a gentleman called Jimmy Russell.
Dad then sold the car to David and Allan Lowe, and David raced the old girl until he sold her.
Some many years ago a family friend saw the Neddy in a museum in Queensland, but can't remember the name or exactly where......Dont know if it is still there!!

Anyway would love to find the old girl and get some new photos for Dad as he will be 70 this year and he still speaks with great pride of the old girl.

Any info would be greatly appreciated

About 10 years ago, David Lowe helped me out with some early Armstrong 500 photos. I can't remember which Nedloh he owned, but I do remember him telling me he spent a lot of time stopping the whole thing flexing.

In those days he was doing his restorations out of Paul Sabine's Brooklands complex in or around Sandringham in Melbourne. He can probably be tracked down through the Austin Seven Club of Victoria, for his recollections of his time with the car.

There were perhaps three Nedloh cars built by Jim Russell and his father. You refer to Nedloh 1 -- inverted Singer chassis with Holden engine and a series of very good drivers, including Jim ( Stumpy), your father, Maggie Bone, her then husband David Lowe, Peter Mohr....sold eventually to Frank Moore in Queensland at a time when Frank Moore with his purchases almost decimated any pre 1961 field. When I last heard of it the car was still with Frank Moore -- although " in a museum in Queensland" may suggest a different -- or the same-- location. This was a very effective racing car, for all its unsophisticated background. I for one had a great time racing against it. If it helps, I am in more-or-less regular contact with several of its former drivers...

One Nedloh story: during his ownership David Lowe decided to go fancy and ordered a "NEDLOH" woven badge for his driving suit. He even took a "HOLDEN" woven badge along to the embroiderers as a base. When he went to collect the finished product, the business owner spoke of the stupid Filipino female who had spelt David's badge backwards -- so he had fired her ignoring her frustrated pleadings-- as he presented David with a correctly spelt newly embroidered badge that said " HOLDEN"

The "Museum in Queensland" was the, at the time, Frank Gardner advanced driver centre at Norwell which had a museum attached. At the time I was there about ten years ago, for the release of Alec Mildren's book, Frank owned about half the cars in the museum and not just pre '61 cars.

By the way, I have now had a look at those great photos of the car when owned by your father: with all due respect to all its other owners, it NEVER looked that smart again

I don't think this is a Nedloh. It looks like the Nalla to me.

Methinks you're older than you think, Dick...

Was not the Mildren book a release of the late nineties?

As for the Nedloh, I feel this was a very smart way for anyone to build a Special in the late fifties or early sixties. The grey Holden was readily available and very workable, there was a variety of gearboxes to mate up to it and a live rear axle and concocted independent front end could be made to work very well in a front-engined car of compact dimensions. Whether the car had a spaceframe chassis or something like the inverted Singer, it wouldn't be too hard to build, drive or work on.

Thanks for sorting that out guys - I've been mis-identifying this car for more years than I want to admit to.
Yes - a wonderful variation on the grey motor/open wheeler theme, and I recall it was for sale at the time.
Taken at Calder BTW.

This is the Nedloh after my father sold it. David or Allan built the rear body section over the petrol tank and also did some changes to the front of the Nedloh.

The Nedloh used to run in formula Libra and was very competitive in Jimmy and Dads hands. Dad still holds some lap record at Calder, In the Nedloh
Apparently there was a rule change which let rear engine cars into the class and the Nedloh was then, no longer competitive and it wasn't till a
few years later that the car was able to run in historics.

I quized my father today on the Nedlohs and he can only remember 2 ever being built. The second Nedloh was a 2.4 litre (Or close to it) rear engine car.

Regards Clint

Hi all, I will be seeing Jim (Stumpy) Russell at the VHRR historic Rob Roy hillclimb this weekend, and I will pass on this info to him.

Jimmy will be running his Ford V8 special, and I will be running my Mazda RX7,looks like being a good meeting.
Rob Roy always has that nice layback feel about it.

All the best, Regards Ron.

Nedloh 3 was the rear engined car.
Nedloh 2 is still as far as I know in Jim's hands: very small offset single seater( driver to the left), Holden engine in the front. Effortlessly Driver of the Meeting stuff in Jim's hands Phillip Island a decade or more ago, able to beat on that day and many days contemporary Formula 1 and Tasman cars.

One of my favourite pics showed Colin Bond or John Dawson Damer( Lotus 16, severely understeering), my Nota Formula Junior, neutral steering), and David Lowe( Nedloh 1, oversteering) neck and neck around Energol Corner at Oran Park in perhaps 1974. Racing Car News printed the photo

Ron... say hullo to Jim from me, and tell him I have nearly finished his book

An Historic Sandown poster showed a car I didnt recognize, with a long-ish anteater nose. It took me a while, but when I realized the driver was vertically challenged sitting down as he was, I realized that the Sandown poster showed early Nedloh 1 with Stumpy at the wheel -- just like that nice pic above. Though small-ish yet perfectly formed, Jim (Stumpy)has been a class act in the driving department since the late 50s -- one on the short list of the Lex Davison great drivers-to-be list, indeed

Clinton, where are you and your father located? Perhaps that info might help getting photos to you.

Hi John. I spoke to Jim yesterday at Rob Roy,he said to say hi, also spoke to Clinton and pointed him in the direction of Jim,s pit, where the Ford V8 special was parked,so I guess Jim would have some of the info he was looking for about the Nedloh.

All the best, Regards, Ron.

Thanks Ron, I did find Jim and his wife and what lovely people both of them are.
I did get some information from Jim and he is going to send some pictures of the Nedloh that he has. I look forward in seeing them and I will post them up here as well.

Jim and Dad built the Nedloh in 1959, raced her and sold her to my Dad in 1964/1965.

My next port of call is to find David Lowe and get info from him.

If anyone knows Peter Mohr and can send him my way I would be greatly appreciated.

Jim and Joyce Russell are national treasures. Jim is ya yeoman farmer(these days) and Joyce is one of those splendid human welfare people who do significant damage to themselves because it may well be that they care too much. There is a lot more to them than that: Joyce( Cooper) used to race-- you will find a photo of her on this forum if you search, the wonderful John K Cummins was their Best Man in wonderful circumstances at Sydney's Wayside Chapel, Jim has raced so well for so long, remains one of Australian Historic Racing's best drivers, and rules the roost among us Ford V8 drivers these days. They are also Grandparents Of The Year, because my recently pregnant Honorary Godson their son Benny Russell Bravery Award Winner who Refuses to Mow Their Lawn gave birth the other day( well you know what I mean)

( If you want me to start a Stumpy Russell etc Admiration Society thread then I will)

Please look up Peter Mohr's Kangaroo Point (Brisbane)address . I am sure he will be happy to help.

And thank you, Ron, for your message-passing

When Peter Mohr bought the Nalla from Rick Perry, changed its colour from purple to blue, and went very quickly in it, Rick Perry said to Peter " If I had known it would go that fast, I would have painted it blue"

Hi there everyone.
Well my quest to find the Nedloh had to take a back seat over the last month or so due to work commitments.

I spent some time at my dads place going through old photos when I stumbled on these gems.
This was the day when the Nedloh arrived at our house still in Jims alloy, dusty finish.

Dad then spent the next few weeks painting and cleaning the Nedloh up. Dad also in these first few weeks of
owning the Nedloh replaced the front drum brakes to modern (HA HA) disc brakes.

Does anyone know who the current owner is and where the car is ??????

I still hope to be catching up with David, Peter and picking there brians about what they did to Nedloh, Their pictures, etc etc in the next couple of weeks or so.....

Thanks all Clinton Paech
