Hey everybody,

I am searching for information about the british Formula Vee Championship in the 1970s. I could not find a thread about the small formula class in great britain.
As far as I know the Formula Vee class was never accepted by the british racers and the Formula Super Vee was to similar to the british Formula 3 Championship.
(Correct me if I am wrong.)
But anyway I would love to see some information about the races, drivers and cars. On the botton of this post are some links to race reports, starter grids and
other information I have.
I was able to buy a british Formula Vee car a couple of weeks ago. It is in very bad condition and probably run in some autocross races in his earlier life. The car
is a CM. The original Chassis plate came with the car. I have never heard about this manufacturer, but the documents that came with the car show that it was
quite competitive in the 1970s. It was once on the cover of the "Vee Sport News". I am wondering about the original colour of the car. Underneath the current red colour is some yellow
and blue, could that be the original colour? I would be really thankfull if someone remembers the car and may have some documents about it. :) There are some pictures of the current
condition of the car linkedb below.

Links to Flickr, because I am not quite sure how to post pictures directly into the post:

There have been several threads on this and allied subjects
Try entering "vee" in the search facility

I think you're right about FSV not catching on in the UK because it was too close to FF, but I suspect the earlier 1200cc formula was regarded as just another club single-seater category, of which there were several alternatives. And maybe the fact that it wasn't a British-devised formula might have had something to do with it :)

Hopefully Erlemin will see this thread - he has a penchent for all things Vee - and I'm sure he'll lap up those posts of yours, they're pure gold!

I've nearly finished restoring the prototype Elden Supervee - http://ccgi.alanmorg...topic.php?t=554

The lack of success of British Vee/SVee racing was not through lack of effort by Volkswagen. I have a full record of every race my car did in period, and it looks as though a foray from the UK to Nuerburgring would have paid it's own way if you got a midfield result, thanks to the prize money from VW.

Air-Cooled Formula Supervee cars have their own class in Historic FF2000 racing and water-cooled cars can run in Classic Formula 3. Erlemin will tell you all about the opportunities to race an Historic Formula Vee...

Wow your Elden looks amazing!!! With which material is the suspension plated?
I did not know that it is possible to powder coat a complete chassis. What happens
if you have to weld somthing afterwards, for what so ever reason? Can you
powder coat certain parts again?

Regards

Ben

Have to agree in the 70s when UK FF1600 was so strong; Formula Vee was always second best

On a brighter note however saw a Formula Vee race this year at Mallory Park with a full grid ( plus reserves) and it actually reminded of FF1600 from the 70s :)

Hi Ben

The Elden doesn't look quite so amazing in th flesh - it's been the subject of a refurbishment rather than a restoration. However - the suspension has been bright nickel plated (as per the original) and yes, it is possible to powder coat part of a chassis, although it's far better to do it all in one hit. The Elden is a semi-monocoque, so I had to remove all the panels before having the chassis re-coated, and then bonded them and rivetted them back on afterwards. Welding or repairing a powder-coated chassis simply involves grinding/filing/sanding the appropriate area back to bare metal, completing the repair and making good.

Good luck!
