I'm about to start a rebuild on a car which appears to have been a trials racer in 1933-1934 (+?).

How would I research any race history of the vehicle that I own from here in the US?

And finding a photo would be the holy grail. I badly need help from an expert !

1933 MG J2
Chassis Number: J 3663
Registration Number: MG 2762
Original Owner: J.M. Horan (London)

First port of call would probably be the Triple M Register:

Next, if you haven't yet, acquire copies of "75 Years of the J2 M.G." and "How They Ran, MG J1s and J2s in Competition", both by the late Mr. Mike Hawke. The books cover 50+ years of reserach for competition records of the M.G. J1s and J2s. J2 3663 has competition listings in both books. It was listed in the book with known current owner as Robin Weatherall/USA. Books, I think are available through the M.G. Car Club/Triple-M Register Library.

The Triple-M Register is a great source of information, knowledge and contacts for assistance with our pre-war cars. I'm assuming you are in the USA. If so, you should also consider joining the North American MMM Register (http://sites.google....e/mgnammmr/home), another great source of assistance and knowledge. Just next month (June 13-17), if you are unaware, there is a once every 5 year North American MG gathering, MG2011, in Reno/Tahoe, Nevada. This is a conglomerate meet of all 5 North American MG Registers, featuring MGs from pre-war to present. Check the website: www.MG2011.com.

I'll be getting on board with Tom Metcalf and the "North American" gang soon enough. I've green lighted the rebuild on J3663. And the books that you recommended are on order!

He gets several mentions in the Donald Cowbourne book 'British Trial Drivers - Their Cars and Awards 1929-39'. In case you don't have a copy ....

Year Trial Car Entry No. Result
1931 MCC London-Gloucester trial Austin 53 Non-starter or retired
1933 MCC Exeter trial MG J2 Midget 297 Retired
1934 B&HMC Brighton Beer trial MG 1st class award
1934 MCC Edinburgh trial MG J2 Midget 42 Premier award
1934 MCC Land's End trial MG J2 Midget 225 Premier award

Thanks Gav. This forum has been the resource that I've needed. But rule #1, it ain't all on the internet. Books still rule!
