Did this guy really think that KR has to prove anything ? Wilhelm Noll told me once the reason he never took part in such kind of meetings was that there were to many idiots who wanted to prove they were the real champs by 'beating' him in a parade type event....

I noticed Ago, Roberts and a few others only did selected rides. Anyone take any times, Grant was around 57's. Parrish a full minute, I timed him at Cadwell once, er looked faster on TV he was lapping the same time as a 125cc Honda from 1979 ;) The scariest thing out there were the chairs look at my video the chap doing wheelies came close to getting wiped out. I'm contemplating having a go next year I have a Ukelele just need the Shuttleworth Special............;)

Just to put things into some sort of perspective Mike Powell on his Bantam was doing 60 second laps in the Sunday sessions. I take it they only have 3 gears still. He was going well and probably enjoying the chance to ride Mallory without the chicanes.

That would be right. Gary Hoyle told me he was going to be there with his Jim Lee framed Goldie.

Bugger.... ): I wish I'd have seen him and the machine in the paddock, as you know Ben dad built the original engine and run it for a while on a lathe he would have machined quite a few of the cycle parts too

Did anyone notice I think was a Jim Lee Goldstar, I caught a fleeting glance on track but wasn't going back to the paddock. the queue later on was enormous.

Would this be it? I can't make head nor tail of the programme and numbering system... :drunk:

Its not very sharp I'm afraid which is why I guess I had taken out from my first sort through....

There are one or two good quality videos on YouTube of Mallory. The bike you mentioned joeninety is on the first link at 1min 48secs. The next one shows Mike Powell on his Bantam No.33 ( blue bike ) leading them all round at 2mins 25secs and some poor old sod on some sort of Honda trying to keep up. This poor old sod gets more airtime at 2mins 46secs. ( No.43 ) The last one shows Sammy on the Gilera, Kenny, minus MCN nob, Ago, Cooper etc. All good stuff.

This is the one joeninety was talking about. His blue number is tucked just inside the screen at the front No.256 Gary Hoyle.

Thanks for taking the time to post these, still smarting I never got to meet Gary. With reference to the programme I found it harder to understand than Chinese algebra

There seems to a problem these days with the printed word.

Have you tried reading articles in Classic Racer where the timeline of the piece jumps from one page to another forward, then back across two pages and often starts on a double page picture in black print on a dark background?

Perhaps it’s the computer age and the layout man has been replaced by some software no-one understands.

Hi Chris. I don't think it is THE Jim Lee Goldie (ie Grant's one), but it is a customer frame kit (Jim marketed them, but I don't think he made many). Mick Grant said that the rear suspension mountings were different on his Goldie.

Thanks Ben for the usuall accurate delve into the past.
It's seems their is a lot of history to be shared about the goings on at Birstall, I spent most of my time after hours tinkering with welding rods and lathes so didn't see much of the daytime action. ):

Ripper sound, and a Roberts link... :drunk:

I forwarded a link to Rob North who got a real kick out of the Ago/Cooper battle. He told me he saw "The Race" and had just gotten a new van and was watching from the roof. In his excitement he caved the roof in.

I know Kenny was slowed by the MCN guy pratting around, but he did go into the Esses a bit quick a couple of times - here his back wheel is just about off the ground.

Kenny related how he worked out getting his knee out and on the tarmac would enable him to corner faster.
The accompanying film of him practicing the art on a dirt track bike was fascinating !!

Re: 1000 Bikes on TV

Well disappointed doesn't even come close for me. How the hell do you call that the Festival of 1000 Bikes ? If the VMCC were involved with that they should be ashamed. I can't believe I am the only one that feels this way. Interesting yes, but not what was expected when I sat down to watch.

Yes I agree, I enjoyed it but the programme wasn't about The Festival of 1000 Bikes, very misleading?

Yes Steve Parish was moving around the paddock with a camera man following him, I did see him doing a piece about the RG 500 he rode so hopefully it will be better coverage.

Just in case you missed this or are out of the UK (Wales etc.). Documentary from Mallory Park festival of 1000 bikes featuring Kenny Roberts and a few great memories from the past especially Alex George from the other side of the fence.

KR not just talking about Jarno but the Tom Herron's of this world and comments from some of the best most straight talking blokes of recent times peppered with comments from Alex George who highlights the very backbone of racing from his early days, the very lifeblood of racing in truth, often overlooked by many but appreciated on this forum. I'm just posting that TV programme with Sheene and Hunt, love them or loathe them. I would like to add that on meeting Bazza how impressed I was on his recollection of his lap times on the 125 Suzuki. Great Man.

I have seen a Duke Powersport Entertainment Catalogue and on page 23 they are advertising a DVD of the Festival Of A 1000 Bikes with lots of unseen footage so it must be the footage Steve Parish was doing maybe out on Dec 5th.
