I hear the BBC are to transmit a documentary about the life and times of commentator Murray Walker.
It is scheduled for next Sunday evening 5th June 2011 on BBC2 at 8.00pm for one hour. With lots of archive footage from his eariest day right up to date including his recent tour in Australia this year , interviews and much more. Not to be missed I think.

It's a rare treat to meet one of your heroes and even better when you find out that they are even nicer than you thought they might be.
Many thanks to you (and others involved) for making that happen earlier this year. I will be sure to watch it. Thanks for the heads-up.

Amazing that he's still so sprightly and enthusiastic, and never forgets his roots - yesterday he was at the British Superbikes meeting at rainy Thruxton, his local circuit.

A few years ago I attended an "Audience with Murray Walker" organised by the Western Province Racing Club in Cape Town. The club paid for his travel and accommodation and, in return, he had to give a talk. The room was absolutely packed with barely room to breathe and he held us enthralled for a couple of hours with stories and anecdotes from his years of experience. The man is a born raconteur and held us captivated during his talk. However, I imagine the televised version will have been "sanitised" and some of his more risque recollections (some of the funniest ones) perhaps won't be included ....

The next day he contributed to my only claim to fame - to have participated in a race commentated by Murray Walker himself :) Sadly, I was a little busy at the time and couldn't hear any of his commentary - no doubt spiced with observations such as "... and he has completed half the race and has something like half a race to go ...."

I look forward to the TV programme!

There was an excellent programme featuring Murray's TT recollections earlier this week on ITV4. It was most illuminating to a non-bike expert like me, and his memories covered all of the good and the great and made fascinating viewing. Catch it if it is repeated.

Seconded. Caught it purely by chance while channel hopping. No sign of a repeat on the ITV 4 website though. Not apparently on ITVPlayer either.

Yes that was indeed a cracker - the man has amazing powers of recollection and a great story teller.

Wonderful documentary that on Murray. Great watch. Commentators can try and be him, but there won't be another person like him.

Yep. Thoroughly enjoyable.

One question though: JYS was filmed sitting on a Norah Tyrrell memorial seat. Nice touch. But where?

The Murray Walker documentary was fantastic. I still laugh out loud at some of the things he said, such as saying to Bernie about buying McLaren, and I never tire his commentary in the closing stages of the 1996 Japanese Grand Prix. Murray is truly a one-off.

I was never much of a fan of Walker as a commentator; I can't stand incessant hyperbole, Narrated by Walker himself in a very self-deprecating way this programme showed the absolute dedication and devotion of the man. The very sincere affection shown by so many drivers, past and present, reminds me what he did for the televised sport.

Top stuff.

They missed the best one, the rallycross Mini with the hole cut in the windscreen "so that the driver can see where he's going"...CRASH BANG WALLOP!

I used to see Murray at Thruxton on Easter Saturdays wandering round the paddock and always found him a great guy to chat to. He wasn't hurried and took his time to let you know what was happening & who to look out for - everything was calm and effortless. However when someone gave him a microphone and told him to start it was as if his trousers were on fire!

I did a televised Formula Ford race at Silverstone in 82 or 83. Murray was up at the crack of dawn interviewing every driver in the queue for scrutineering and making notes on his clipboard that may be of interest for his commentary. Very chatty and charming. One of a kind :)

Excellent television - wonderful to see how everybody in the motorsport world all love him. All should read his auto "Unless I'm Very Much Mistaken" as it's very nicely written.

Answering my own question - in his own garden! Other memorial seats were shown in the BBC Racing Legends documentary: one each for Cevert, Clark and Rindt. The implication was that there were several more.
