I was wondering if anyone with any knowledge of german motorsport in the fifties could help me out with finding out what car & driver is on the following picture. The image is (apparantly) from a race on the Sachsenring in 1956, I got it at an auction. As the iron curtain wasn't there yet it could be a west-german car. I have never seen this car in any other photo from events in that era.

It looks slightly like a Porsche, but I'm pretty sure it isn't actually one of those as its far too bulbous for a Porsche, especially the back wheel cases and the 'stern' of the car. It also has a little roll hoop and a nicely shaped windscreen. Beside that there seems to be no grill at the front, which probably means it was mid-engined. It can't be any of the other well known east german sports cars of the time like an EMW as they looked very different.

It might be some special, but which one?? Help!

Is that some sort of military fence in the background?

I'm quite sure it is Rudolf Stumpf with his Stumpf-VW or Porsche 1100cc Special. The car was built in the early fifties and in 1955 it became a Porsche Special.
I think the picture is from 1955

Thanks Bjørn! You probably got that result due to the race number 45 on the side?

I must emphasise again, that it says 1956 on the photo and not 1955. But you might be right, as I can't find any results or programmes of the 1956 race, only some for some sidecar race! It's likely then that someone put the wrong year on the photo..

Does anyone have any information about Stumpf and this car? What kind of Porsche engine did his special have, one from the 550 spyder models or just a 356?
