With Fernando under contract to the end of 2016 and some concerns about Felipe's overall performances, the question is who will be racing alongside him in 2013, when Felipe's contract is up for grabs. The obvious choice is Kubica, but we don't know whether his health will be alright yet, so I've left him out of this poll, since I guess he'll stay loyal to Renault for persisting with him when coming back. I know I'd done so...

If Felipe drives like today, then he has every chance of staying put. But I'm a keen admirer of Paul Di Resta - who fits the bill with some Italian ancestry. I suppose he speaks Italian too, but provided Rosberg is available I'd have him alongside Alonso. So I'd say he's in pole position for the drive, and I would not be one iota surprised if he snubs Merc's contract offer. He went there to have the chance to win races, and he hasn't had it... That's why he'll be in red in 2013. If not, then it's Massa or Di Resta or a wildcard in Kubica. PĂ©rez is a longshot, even though he's on the team's books.

What do you think about this?

Rosberg would be my choice. Fast, consistent, experienced. No WDC fight experience yet, but for this they already have Alonso.

The World ends in 2012, so why bother.

Although if we somehow get saved by an alien race and we still have an F1 season in 2012, I'd say Kobayashi. I don't think he's better than Alonso but still he would beat the spaniard more oftenly than Massa which would be pretty exciting. Also, I don't see the same relationship between Alonso and Kobayashi than between Alonso and Hamilton during 2007 so I think there wouldn't be any problems at all.

Personally I'm looking forward to when Massa leaves, his seat is completely wasted and it would be exciting to see someone else given a chance. Most drivers on the grid would kill to get a ride with Ferrari, I'd put most of them in that seat over Massa.

Felipe has an option for next year, not a guarantee.

My mates seem to think rosberg but i reckon he will stay at merc.

I'd go with petrov. Kubica, if fit, is the first choice for Renault. I guess petrov is a consistent driver, maybe he's not a top driver (not yet), but this could play in his favour. Would i be a team manager, i'll never hire two title contender drivers in the same team. Think about Alonso and Hamilton in 2007: it was not a defeat for McLaren, but some kind of suicide.

A Vettel Alonso battle in the same car would be a real treat for F1

Button's contract is up at the end of next season, so I'm surprised he's not an option. Not that I'd particularly like to see him there.

I think Vettel is under contract to RB till the end of 2014

On topic, Perez or Webber IMO. Button will probably stay at McLaren

Kubica. But if he won't be "fit" then take Bianchi. Such young drivers deserve that chance.

Kobayashi should go to the RBR and be Vettel's teammate.

I think it is a huge assumption to presume Massa will be at Ferrari next season. Personally I would be surprised if he lasts until the end of this season.

Well none of the list look very suitable for the sit. Kubica's career is all but over so... I'd go for Rosberg. I'd pick a solid driver like him.

Di Resta is looking very impressive. Dominating the experienced and good sutil, and he has a calm thoughtful vibe about him, that you don't see often. He looks the best prospect so far.

Any top echelon driver who is willing to play 2nd fiddle to Alonso. Massa days seem numbered.

Sorry why was my answer off topic?

I voted 'other' which is an option in the poll. My 'other' is Vetel, thats who I want to see in a Ferrari sooner of later, even though I don't expect it to happen.

It was very much on topic thank you very much.

I voted for Kamui because I really like the guy but I don't think it's that realistic for a top team to get him at this moment. I'm thinking he'll first have to move to a team at a level similar to Renault (or Mercedes) before being taken seriously or considered by Ferrari/RBR/McLaren (that is, if he performs well in such a team).

I don't understand that people with eyes in their head and reasonable thinking still believe this. Let's say for argument sake that this was true, that the second driver should not be better than Alonso or not challenge him.

Why would they get rid of Massa then? You think that Ferrari - any F1 team for that matter - thinks: 'Oh well, we'll need a a driver that is just a tenth slower than our first driver in qualifying, always finishes one place behind our first driver, so he will take points of the rivals of our first driver, but not take points away from our first driver?'

Really?

Very simple. If a driver joins Ferrari, even under a number 2 contract, and he outperforms Alonso, he will not be reigned in or given the whistle, but the number 1 contract for Alonso is not worth the words printed on it. The allegiance or number 1 one status will change before Alonso can blink his eyes. Hasn't the Massa-Raikkonen pairing showed us that before? Or what happened at McLaren with Alonso and Hamilton?

I would agree with you on bianchi, he's very fast but does make mistakes and being in the same team as alonso would only help him.

When was the last time Ferrari ran with 2 top drivers? I'm not sure it has ever happened. I don't think Kubica will be back, taking a total rookie is not their style. What about Heikki?

Yeah but bianchi's been part of their development programme for about 2 years so they know him well but it will likely be perez who takes massa's seat because he's part of their driver devlopment programme as well.

Problem is finding two top drivers. They don't exactly grow on trees where they can just take their pick. They will hire the best driver they can find, as always, although I think Massa is as fast as anyone available. Let's not forget he was as fast as Kimi, he is proven.

Robert Kubica who will in my opinion lose some of his pace after his recovery. Not beating Alonso but a reliable quick guy. Brilliant partnership for Ferrari.

If not Massa then I would say Ferrari's list should be:

1. Kubica (at 100%)
2. Kobayashi
3. Rosberg
4. Button
5. Webber

No way it'll be Bianchi, unless he gets promoted to a lower F1 team next year and he delivers above the expectations. He's not looking anywhere near ready enough in GP2, and in fact his GP2 performances have only raised some doubts about his speed.

Frankly looking at the options at the moment, I can sort of understand why they're keeping their confidence in Massa. There's just no obvious replacement right now, why bother. It annoys me because I'd like to see new drivers being given a chance in a top car, but it's the truth.

Don't think it'll be Britney:

F1 : Domenicali denies Ferrari Formula 1 contact with Nico Rosberg about 2012
Sunday, 12 June 2011 11:48
Asked what will happen if Massa does not improve, Domenicali again answered "we'll see", prompting Ferrari spokesman Luca Colajanni to intervene and remind the journalist that Luca di Montezemolo has confirmed the 30 year old will be driving alongside Fernando Alonso next season.

Authoritative Italian magazine Autosprint, however, has linked Nico Rosberg with Massa's 2012 seat.

"I read it. I can guarantee you 100 percent there has been no contact," insisted Domenicali.

Rosberg drives for Mercedes, which is almost on par with Ferrari, seems happy there and is the #1 driver. Most drivers wouldn't say no to Ferrari, but I'm actually not sure he'd give that up to go be Alonso's bitch.
