I was at both of these meetings and when both JC and Chatterton got by Ago, (I saw the move by JC on Ago but not the one by Chat on him at Cadwell) in both cases there was a huge roar from the crowd more akin to Man United scoring a championship winning goal (I would imagine) rather than a pass at a motorcycle racing event. The 1971 Race of the Year especially for those that witnessed it will live on in their memories as one of the greatest races ever on a short circuit. It was a fantastic.

Has been said , Ago was fortunate in having such superior machinery for many of those years and the best riders get the best bikes but not all riders are capable of getting the best from them. Also, he was just as good on four or two strokes equally. He had the likes of Mike and Read/Redman at the beginning of his GP career, then had to deal with Pasolini and Jarno who was simply a phenomenon, then Sheene/Baker etc at the end. He was and always be a worthy multi world champion and he is still an absolute gent, and a great ambassador of the sport.

Ooooooo techno porn, thank you :drunk:

I went to the VJMC do at Uttoxeter racecouirse last weekend and JC was there sat next the BSA (which was actually a Triumph wasn't it? Vertical barrels?). I was going to have a quick word and thank him for the memory but he must be fed up with the 'I was there' bods by now.

Thats always been my opinion of Ago too Jim, he could only beat whoever was around at the time and during the lean years after the works teams went away for a while he wasnt going to ask for a slower bike to even things up a bit.

Its a bit like when Doohan was asked by a journo in the 90's if he felt he was making the GP's boring by trouncing everyone at each round, he replied 'oh ok so are you saying I should slow down a bit then?'

Re Ago at Cadwell, Chat passed him coming out of Charlies the second time he beat him, I saw that pass, the first time he beat him he passed him round Chris Curve, I didnt see that one but Derek himself once described it to me which was just as memorable.
