OK, generally, Japanese toy makers were pretty accurate in making their tinplate automobiles. Now looking at this MG "TD" or "TF" friction toy, one would think that this "1956 Overland Race' would have been utter fantasy. But was it???

Someone here ought to know if anything like that ever took place... or if it was the rendition of a car in one of Hollywood's racing-car movie disasters that may have disappeared from the screens for good reasons!
1956 'Overland Race' - did it really take place?

Possibly influenced by the RedEx Rallies in Australia (not that MG ever won those)?
I have a similar toy except that the headlights are part of the 'guard pressing and there is no script. Weird chassis details are the same.
Cheers,
Matthew.

Funny you should mention Hollywood, it appears there was a 6 min animation made in 1971 called
"The Great Continental Overland Cross-Country Race" if you are in the right zone, which I am not , here is a link which may throw some light on the subject.
