Back then these guys needed a sense of humour and people used to say: "The faster you drive round the Ring the less you know and maybe that's the best thing to do"
In those ten F1 season from '67-'76 ten (10!) drivers crashed to death during race weekends and two drivers died during testing.
If that happened in today's F1the circuit would have been banned already.

During its later years, the race distance was 14 laps, although in the 50's I believe it was 22 laps.

It was reduced to 15 laps in 1958 in line with the then new shorter time, distance and AvGas fuel regulations. In 1968 it was reduced to 14 laps and I think from memory, there was one race that was only 12 laps during the early 1970s.
