Well there we have it.

Agreed. I didn't want to appear to be doubting him, just never heard that he was involved before. i've always held Emmo in hi esteem. Now there's even more reason to do so.

I've also never seen that picture before of Lauda out of the car.

Brühl in the well-known Lauda pose - looks good and intensive.

He looks awesome. That picture alone just multiplied my expectations for this movie. Good interview, too. He's been hanging out with Lauda.

Ron Howard Filming 'Rush' at the Nurburgring Nordschleife
16 January 2012

Posted Image

F1 fans are in for another cinema treat following the success of Senna.

Rush, which tells the story of James Hunt and Niki Lauda’s battle for the 1976 world championship, is being filmed by Oscar awarding-winning director Ron Howard.

Howard’s crew have been filming at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, scene of Lauda’s near-fatal crash that year, using cars from the period.

These images show a McLaren M23, Surtees TS19 and a pair of March 761s lapping the Nordschleife.

The contemporary Autocourse says that Lunger, Edwards, Ertl and Merzario were indeed the first drivers on the scene to help Lauda, but that once he was out of the car, "his fellows surrounded him and persuaded him to lie down. They stripped off his charred overalls and Lunger and Fittipaldi went down opposite sides feeling for broken bones."

Posted Image

Fittipaldi is on the far right with his back to the camera. I think the other people around Lauda are (L-R) Pace? (Brazilian flag on overalls), a marshal?, Keegan, Merzario and Lunger.

It's John Watson on the far left

Interesting look on Lauda's face, obviously he can't see his own face; but only his hand. The first thing Ronnie Peterson looked at was his damaged hand too because Hunt wouldn't let him look at his legs. I know Niki was probably in some level of shock; but nonetheless he looks remarkably calm.

Yeah, I find it so weird that he was conscious and quite clearly aware of what was going on straight after the crash, and then went into a coma a little while later. Like you said, it must have been the shock. It was a miracle he survived.

I wonder if it might have been a reflex to look at his hand. Mauro Bianchi did the same thing after being horribly burned at Le Mans in 1968. I read an interview where Jacky Ickx said he was looking at his shrinking (melting) leather gloves while still in the car at Jarama in 1970.

Hardly a "reflex". People are generally interested in their body parts' well being if they are burning or have been burnt.

unbeliveable photo... never seen it before. I stared at it a while marvelling at the drama captured in the moment. I hope Opie Dawg (Ron Howard) can recreate just a fraction of this drama in the film. He is probably the best guy in the business today to do this type of a film for us racing fans. No doubt the film will be somewhat fictional and dramatized, its hollywood after all, but it will not be "driven", for sure.

And at Blackbushe…
1 March 2012

The “Rush” movie crew has been working flat out at Blackbushe Airport in recent days to prepare for the start of filming for the movie, assembling all that is needed to create the right 1970s feel for the movie. And for those who like a bit of nostalgia, there is plenty of it here…

So whos driving the McLaren M23 as Hunt, Jenson? I wonder whos driving the other cars for that matter, surely some of the drivers would be current F1?

Presumably race driving instructors sourced from around Europe. Most of those guys will have single seater experience and the filming is all scripted stuff to get their shots.

Time and insurance would rule out F1 drivers.

McLaren don't usually let anyone but somebody from McLaren drive the old McLarens.

I was under impression that those cars are replicas - apparently very good ones at that.

i think they are originals that are now owned by private collectors - thats what Ron Howard tweeted anyway

Presuming that it is a genuine McLaren, and McLaren owned rather than privately and they aren't happy for it to be driven at 40mph by anyone but one of their drivers, they'd send one of their young kids down there. So presuming those provisos are met, then whoever McLaren have that isn't involved in F1/GP2/GP3/WsBR/Auto GP testing is a safe bet.

*edit* as above it's privately owned so it'll be an instructor.

Actually, from what I understand, most of the cars are the real deal, with few exceptions. As far as the drivers are concerned, I'm sure they won't have problems finding the right people to fill the seats. You''ll notice that the tires are AVON with the GOODYEAR logo oversprayed on. From what I've seen so far it seems to be a first class and accurate effort.

They won't need super fast young guys, they'll need smart experienced guys who will drive the car as they are told. So it will be a mix of stunt drivers, race instructors, good pro drivers from GTs and etc. I don't think we'll see any GP2 hooligans in those things.

If I was Jenson or Lewis, there would be no way I would give up the opportunity to drive that car, if it is an original, and they have time there would be no chance in giving up a drive to some other driver.

Driving those cars is once in a lifetime sort of thing

I reckon they'd just phone GoodYear and ask for them to make a them a batch. Talk about product placement. :)

Ron Howard doesn't do things by half does he? The attention to detail in Apollo 13 was phenomenal and this looks just as good.

If you wanted to be mega-uber nit pick and pedantic.... Hunts car had grey duck tape blanking part of the radiator opening at the Japanese GP it's quite noticable in pictures. I guess it was done just before the start.

I cannot wait for this film.

Regards Mike

The man who was the stunt coordinator in such great films as Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan is the man running that side of the show for this film. Also is credited for performing some stunts as well.

Got a good guy for realism.

Looking the part is one thing, acting the part is another. But he is an Aussie, and the men from the land of Oz have the swagger about them that would be comparable to Hunt.

I know they have built this mock pit lane, so I presume they are going to digitize the race tracks in afterwards? As I read this pit lane would 'stand in' for several tracks.
