I have been researching some MG history and wonder if anyone can help with the following:

Does anyone have a results list of competitors for the Lobethal 1/1/1948 races showing race numbers?

Also, I have two photos of John Barraclough in the MG NE Magnette chassis 0516 circa 1947-1949 when it was painted dark blue and was wondering if anyone can pin them to a race for me? I cant seem to match them with the publications that I have.

One photo shows race number 11 and the supercharger fitted, narrow sealed track but no landscape to see in the photo. White helmet.

The other shows number 17 in the pits, no supercharger and likely a Bathurst landscape.

Posting these is a little beyond me.

Feel free to hijack this thread if you want to talk about MG's, Lobethal or John B.

Cheers,
Matthew.

Hello Matthew. The late John Barraclough's autobiography, "When I grow up", would have to be one of the most entertaining reads ever. What a scallywag! And he spread his charm, along with flying instruction, in my home town of Perth during the war. A bit before my time so I'm sorry I never met him.

Yes

Yes
Find a non artistic person to post the pics and this lot here will get you four yeses

"Backoff" stories? I liked:
1. JB invited Diana Davison to his wedding at 4pm Friday. DD allegedly said" who are you marrying?" and when told said" But, Backoff, she's still at school!" -- to which the reply allegedly was " School finishes at 3.30 Friday"

2.The lovely Tom Stevens still going strong at dangerously close to 100 summers told me 20+ years ago that whenever in South Australia JB walked into a room, not least at the 1950 Australian Grand Prix celebrations in the wine soaked town of Nuriootpa, he had the capability unfamiliar to youngish South Australian lads from the city of churches (like Tom) but recognized by them earnest but too conservative to learn, of moving his eyes towards almost every female in the room in a way that drew attention to (let's be proper and subtle about this) his penis.
I recall Mike Hailwood, really. Same style, same ability, much nicer human being

I have this Matthew, I think I got the numbers from the Lobethal site that was set up for the AGP celebration in 2009. It may not be accurate.

PS. JB in the NE wore No. 17 in both the Easter 1939 and Easter 1940 Bathurst meetings. He won the NSW Hundred in 1948 at Bathurst with is supercharged and wearing no. 11

Somewhere in my collection of stuff I have a pic of an MG that might be this one at Lobethal in 1948...

The pic was sent to me by Gavin Sandford-Morgan. I'll see if I can find it.

Thank you everyone for your help.

David, that list is just what I was after. I guess number 11 must be the NSW 100 in the absence of any other appearance with that number. Number 17 seems to have been a favourite number for John however the car was not blue in the pre war/wartime races.
My photo of number 17 shows the car in absolutely identical condition to the photo on P121 of "The official 50 race history of the Australian Grand Prix" except that the pit lane numbers are black-on-white, not white-on-dark.

"When I Grow Up" is a ripping read although I was briefly confused when the 1939 Bathurst Easter race was described as 1938.

Cheers,
Matthew.
